I love hearing and reading about these women, they are so freaking badass!!! I swim, gather, and spearfish locally and am always struck by the equipment - or lack there of - that these women used. thin cotton suits, crowbars, and fire pits. Meanwhile I come out of the water shivering after being in for 30 minutes in a 3mm wetsuit! There is a group of local women who will "dip" in the mornings here. They get together and float and talk and paddle around for 30-60 minutes each morning between 7-9am in just their swimsuits. The water here is about 10C nearly year round and I'm always blown away by how positive, resilience, and welcoming they all are! The cold doesn't seem to bother them at all! they all giggle as we shiver while we catch up with them post swim. We're celebrating one of their birthdays tomorrow (78!) and having sticky buns and coffee on the beach.

If this post sparks an interest for you I cannot recommend "Island of Sea Women" by Lisa See enough. It's probably my favorite book from the last decade. I'm so sad to hear that this might be the last generation of Haenyeo, but hoping that we might see a sort of hipster resurgence in the coming decades.
