The Baraboo Nazi prom photo shocked the world. The city’s response shocked its residents.

Interesting article on "Ironic Racism," and the diffusion of responsibility across a town for it's own culture.

Stupid kids doing something stupid, simple as that. This is how many people in Baraboo remembered the whole ordeal to me four months later. What almost no one in town seemed interested in asking was, “Why were our kids stupid in this particular way?”

I wish we could just say "You shouldn't take pictures where it looks like you're doing the sieg heil because it represents abhorrent acts and is offensive to most people" and move on. I'm tired of literally thousands of journalists desperately dogpiling on every single "controversial" instance of teenagers doing dumb teenagers things and then having to listen to middle aged men discuss the fact ad-nauseum that, yes, this was in fact a dumb teenager thing.

It always seems like there is a massively inordinate amount of coverage given to stupid stories like this when there are actual instances of violence, corruption and injustice that could instead be getting airtime and page space. Also, the planet will be nearly uninhabitable in many places within 100 years. I just find it hard to get wound up about these kinds of stories besides saying "yeah that was stupid", even as a Jew.
