The cynic in me says they are eagerly looking forward to the publicity from the "evil giant bullies plucky upstart" stories and potential court cases should Airbnb take offence at the name.

That's not a good idea. The problem with Airbnb is that they make housing more expensive, so two out of three of those options would only benefit the rich. Seriously?! If you are going to invest...

Half of this money would be fed back into the local community where a unit is rented out.

That money would be used to fund projects chosen in consultation with the community itself. These might include non-commercial meeting spaces, community centers, or (if the network can generate enough money) social housing.

That's not a good idea. The problem with Airbnb is that they make housing more expensive, so two out of three of those options would only benefit the rich.

Fairbnb guests would be able to choose the community project that would benefit from their stay.

Seriously?! If you are going to invest in a community, you should get the input from the community, not strangers.

This is cause marketing, fair and simple. It's the same vulture business model with all of the same problems, just with a sloppily painted smiley face on it. This business model still does far more harm than good.

I am underwhelmed. They are committing to obeying the law and donating some portion of their profits to efforts in the community, but obeying the law isn't (yet) reason enough to celebrate a company and the money going back to the community is guided by the renter, not by the community. Either way, they're still causing many of the same problems that Airbnb causes.

at least personally, i'm unsure that any airbnb-type service can ever really get around creating significant problems without government regulations since the base model is going to be pretty much the same across the board, but ultimately since services like it are probably here to stay, i'll give fairbnb which at least tries to offset some of the mess they make a fair shot.

Precisely. The main complaint of AirBnb, which is present in all major cities it operates in, is that it significantly lowers the availability of rental properties for citizens in favor of short-term rental for tourists. Thus pushing prices up for everyone. This model doesn't address this basic problems and essentially is trying to capitalize on the AirBnb model by offering some feel-good marketing.
