The only thing worse than a former President being indicted is if a former President cannot be indicted.

It doesn't seem that long ago that any word out of Russia was automatically thought of as propaganda and untrustworthy by the American public.

However, Trump practically demolished all social mores by asking/demanding help from foreign governments against his political foes from China, Ukraine and Russia. How many times did Trump has gushed over Putin? How many times did Trump claim to trust Putin more than US intelligence orgs? We've had Republican senators celebrating the 4th of July in Moscow. We have intelligence reports admitting that Russia wants to undermine faith in the election system:

Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized "influence operations aimed at denigrating President Biden's candidacy and the Democratic Party, supporting Trump, undermining public confidence in the electoral process and exacerbating socio-political divisions in the U.S," says the report by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Any one of these things would have been so scandelous that a candidate or possibly their party never would have recovered a few decades ago. Yet we currently have ranking Republican politicians and talking heads openly supporting Russian agendas from NATO to Ukraine..

It's used as a text book at Russian military academies. It's author is a part of Putin's inner circle (he was in the news recently when his daughter was killed in a car bomb that was meant to kill him).

      Some bits stolen from Wikipedia:

The United Kingdom, merely described as an "extraterritorial floating base of the U.S.", should be cut off from Europe.[9]

Ukraine should be annexed by Russia because "Ukraine as a state has no geopolitical meaning, no particular cultural import or universal significance, no geographic uniqueness, no ethnic exclusiveness, its certain territorial ambitions represents an enormous danger for all of Eurasia and, without resolving the Ukrainian problem, it is in general senseless to speak about continental politics". Ukraine should not be allowed to remain independent, unless it is cordon sanitaire, which would be inadmissible according to Western political standards.[9]

The book stresses the "continental Russian–Islamic alliance" which lies "at the foundation of anti-Atlanticist strategy". The alliance is based on the "traditional character of Russian and Islamic civilization".

Russia should use its special services within the borders of the United States to fuel instability and separatism, for instance, provoke "Afro-American racists". Russia should "introduce geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements – extremist, racist, and sectarian groups, thus destabilizing internal political processes in the U.S. It would also make sense simultaneously to support isolationist tendencies in American politics".[9]

Putin isn't entirely responsible for the issues in the US, but he/his government did pour gasoline on an already burning fire.

That said, this doesn't end with Trump and his cronies, and the US has a long period of growth and healing ahead that will be very difficult for us to manage.

Putin is also losing popularity world-wide faster than he was before the Ukrainian invasion. He's losing on a few fronts now, and hopefully that means he will lose his seat of power soon. He's afraid and his fear is showing in the most interesting way now: calling the kettle black.

    ABC news

Russian President Vladimir Putin says the criminal cases against former US president Donald Trump are politically motivated and demonstrate the "rottenness" of the US political system.

Mr Putin said on Tuesday that what was happening to Mr Trump was good from Russia's point of view."It shows the rottenness of the American political system, which cannot pretend to teach others democracy," he said at an Eastern Economic Forum gathering in Russia's far-eastern city of Vladivostok.

"Everything that is happening with Trump is the persecution of a political rival for political reasons. That's what it is. And this is being done in front of the public of the United States and the whole world," he said.

"We hear that Mr. Trump says that he will solve pressing problems in a few days, including the Ukrainian crisis. Well, this cannot but bring happiness. This is good," Mr Putin said.

However, the Russian leader said his country's poor relations with the US were unlikely to change regardless of who becomes president, because the current administration was "hammering into people's heads" that Russia was an existential adversary.

Russia is also due to have a presidential election in 2024. Mr Putin hedged on Tuesday when asked if he would seek another term after being in power, as either president or prime minister, since 2000.

"We will talk about it" after the Russian parliament sets an election date, he said.

Got it, so prosecuting a political rival is rotten, but poisoning them with Novichok is just fine.
