There are 4 reactions I imagine most of us have from this:

    1. I like his views and would like him as president now, but he's too old for this, he can't run again.

    2. He was already too old by 2016, this was overdue.

    3. Finally, a competent politician will lead the progressive movement! Calling it now, in the 2024 primaries they will be nominated with at least 55% of the popular vote thanks to moderates who were afraid of Bernie. (Slightly hyperbolic but only 40% of Warren supporters backed Bernie after she dropped out which does imply that a lot of people would back progressives if they aren't as 'anti-establishment' and don't have a loud minority sect preaching them like Bernie did.)

    4. I wonder where his rock-solid base will end up? Half of me is somewhat worried this is a "tea-partiers ans movement conservatives who voted Rick Santorum/Newt Gingrich's go to a reactionary like Trump" moment. The dirt-bag left will almost certainly have a candidate in 2024...

It's also plausible that Biden doesn't complete his first term due to advanced age and senility, or chooses not to run for a second term on that basis. It's very important who he picks as VP for...

Ah yeah, forgot people don't tend to run against incumbents in the US if they're in the same party. (The 2012 Democratic primaries and this Republican primary are good examples of this, and also makes the fact there was little opposition to trump in his primary slightly less sad.) Kinda odd given the 2-party system makes these parties be big tents united by nothing other than the other one. (At least until trump but anyway.)

If Sander's support is a result of a cult of personality

Doubt it a lot, I don't think that group is any more than a third of his support. I think most of us just hate campaign finance and have heard about how a completely government-run system would be cheaper (in theory but I digress) and want our 2,000,000,000,000 of already accumulated debt to be nuked from our bank accounts just by pure urgency. Maybe some of us like his record in particular. The 'Bernie Bros'/D(irt)-Baggers and the economic nationalists (Which Bernie used to be more closely aligned with) will absolutely break though, and I have no idea what kind of candidate they would back.
