We’re just over half-way done with 2022. What are your favorite films of the year so far?

I haven’t watched as many films from this year as I would like. But here’s my current Top 5:

  1. Top Gun: Maverick
  2. Happening
  3. Ambulance
  4. The Bad Guys
  5. The Black Phone

The ones that will most likely stay in my top 10 at the end of the year are 1-3. Most of my yearly favorite films come out at the end of the year as you can see by this list that only contains two movies released earlier in the year.

And really quickly I’ll give you my most anticipated films for the rest of the year:

  1. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story
  2. Avatar: The Way of Water
  3. Babylon
  4. Amsterdam
  5. The Fabelmans

So far, Everything Everywhere All At Once. We watch very few movies, but that one was quite good.

Belle. Absolutely no contest. It's so far ahead of anything else. It's essentially a story about a growing up, a story about a introverted girl who is a famous musician in a virtual parallel...

It's essentially a story about a growing up, a story about a introverted girl who is a famous musician in a virtual parallel world, and a reimagining of the beauty and the beast. Gorgeous animation. Wonderful music and a deeply touching story.

Crimes of the Future and After Yang are probably my two stand-outs. I think Cronenberg is capable of tapping into existential fears in a way that's much more nuanced than his "king of body horror"...

Crimes of the Future and After Yang are probably my two stand-outs. I think Cronenberg is capable of tapping into existential fears in a way that's much more nuanced than his "king of body horror" reputation sometimes suggests, and Crimes is maybe his best at that. As for After Yang, in addition to a lot of great themes on familial bonds and personal identity, it's just got some of the most lovely, relaxing, and personality filled production design and location shooting I've seen this year.
