Oh man, I am pretty excited for this! Growing up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was my favorite thing. The 80/90s cartoons were phenomenal but the real gem was the TMNT 2 Secret of the Ooze movie. I actually found it during Covid and made my partner sit down with me and watch it. The movie completely holds up. They used big, animatronic puppets made by the Jim Henson workshop and they still look as alive today as they did back then!

It felt like for a while they took TMNT a dark, serious direction. Probably another victim of the hype from the Christopher Nolan Batman series. So this return to goofy, lighthearted comedy is very welcome. I'm not always a fan of Seth Rogan, but I think his stoner humor will work really well here. Also, that animation style is gorgeous!

The turtles pine after pizza the way his stoner comedy pines after weed, so I think it'll translate just fine.

TMNT was never meant to go dark, it was at its best when it just embraced being what felt like the result of a marketing survey, "Hmm, kids like people older than them, but not yet adults. They like monsters and freaks. They like ninjas, pirates, and vikings, but ninjas use martial arts, which feels more accessible. And we don't want to divide them by choosing cats or dogs, but maybe a pet most people don't have but could have if they wanted to?... alright, Algorithm Bot, aggregate me a group of heroes that appeals to all of these factors!"

Anyways, this looks fun and I'm stoked.

Which is kinda weird, because the 1987 cartoon isn't the original depiction of the turtles was in 84 with the launch of Mirage Comics. It was a send up of Daredevil, which was kinda bleak at the time, but with Hanna Barbera styled animals. You could argue that the franchise is a deviation from what the original property was intended to be, but money gonna money.

I think the same will be true for James Gunn's version of Guardians of the Galaxy for a good long while.

I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing. A willingness to regularly reinvent characters like this is somewhat unique to comic books, and it stands to reason that some reinventions will prove more popular than others.
