Anyways! The plot was pretty typical for a romcom. It had some funny moments but nothing that really "wowed" me (not that I was expecting to be blow away by a romcom). I think the timing it dropped had a lot to do with its current success. When it came out and right now, I don't think there are a ton (if any) romcoms out right now, so its filling a market. It also being cold in the northern parts of the US and it being a movie about beautiful people doing fun things in a beautiful warm location certainly makes for a nice distraction - so I can see the appeal. So all in all, the success makes a little sense to me.
Then again, not sure a place like Tildes is the target market/demographic for a movie like this.
I would say they’re up and coming. And hits like this are establishing Sweeney as an A-Lister rather than an actress that had a following. The cool thing about this is that it’s not just a small...

The cool thing about this is that it’s not just a small success, the way it’s been increasing these past few weekends is kind of unheard of. The last time something like that happened to a movie was The Greatest Showman. It is odd cause, again there’s nothing special about it, but you’d think it’s the romcom of the decade by the way it’s performing.
We did have a post for the trailer that got no comments and hardly any votes. It looked like a run of the mill, dime a dozen rom-com. Has anyone seen it, formed an opinion?

I'm not surprised -- I don't tend to click on videos when browsing Tildes and Maybe even if I enjoyed it maybe I don't have anything interesting or insightful to say. After watching the trailer it...

After watching the trailer it does indeed look super run of the mill. Maybe that's exactly why it succeeds. To quote Fry:
"But that's not why people watch TV! Clever things make people feel stupid and unexpected things make them feel scared."
Spend a miniscule amount of money, let new people make something new, and see what sticks. I would support that kind of movie landscape rather than everything has to be a franchise to make a billion.
Back in the 1950s, Hong Kong cinema had a type of move called "Seven Day Wonders (七日仙)" -- the cameras would start to roll on day one and including post production sound mixing , editing and everything, it'd hit the theatre on day 7. Wasn't anything magical about the number 7 of course, some of these took maybe even ten days (gasp!)
But it happened out of a very unique environment:
(1) physical films were very expensive
(2) equipment were crazy expensive and rentals were for ten day periods
(3) new form of entertainment with demand far outstripping supply
(4) a unique boycotting period for the four cinema lines against price gouging from film productions studios - no matter how good a film is it won't air more than one week, so there's no incentive to make a good film or great film rather than a passable film
(5) If a film does very poorly it'll get taken off screen after a couple days and swapped with new
And it made a huge catalog of frankly not that great films! But-- it gave the industry a lot of experience and made mad money, and it sort of grew our culture, solidified collective memory, and the rapid iteration allowed for actually great and fun films to emerge after the "clean up" period. Good for them! Sometimes I just want to turn tv on and watch something dumb that doesn't leave me too upset for bed time.
I haven’t seen it. As I understand it, however, it’s a modern retelling of Much Ado About Nothing. In the way 10 things I hate about you is Taming of the Shrew or how Clueless is Emma. Seems to be...

Seems to be more of a serviceable romcom than anything spellbinding, but romcoms at this budget level with rising stars don’t really get made anymore. And it certainly hit a chord with the TikTok crowd which has become more important in determining hits as time progresses.

EDIT forgot to add, one of the things I enjoyed most about the movie was the soundtrack. It had some good hits. The Still Woozy's - Anyone But You is a nice little moody track. Remi Wolk and Dominic Fike's - Photo ID is another good jam.
