I think this is steamrolling. I think it’s sweeping everything and honestly thank god for that. Easily would make it the best Best Picture winner of the 21st century.
Edit: and I say this fully knowing CC does not matter for the Oscar’s.
It's good but not that good.
same. it was damn good, damn damn good, but we're talking serious american movies, no?
we've got a whole world of cinema to consider.
What do you think would be the best movie? I haven't seen a better one, but then agian, I haven't seen many movies in general.
You should fix that.
Fair enough
Why do you like it and why do you think it's better than, say, Everything Everywhere All At Once?
Other notable 21st century releases off the top of my head:
The Lord of the Rings
Spirited Away
Multiple Tarantino and Nolan films, including Kill Bill and The Prestige
The Wolf of Wall Street
Killers of the Flower Moon (I'd give that a tie against Oppenheimer)
Chicago
It's a good film, but it's not anywhere close to "better than a quarter century of nominees and winners" good.
Honestly, I'd be equally happy with giving Best Picture to The Boy and the Heron as I would Oppenheimer or Killers of the Flower Moon. Call it back pay for the lack of respect given to Ghibli and anime in general in the past.
Well EEAAO would not even be in the conversation with me. I've been vocal about me not really caring for it all that much.
I've also written a few comments expressing my thoughts on Oppenheimer. But I think it's an incredible piece of filmmaking. I think it uses the medium of film to its absolute fullest. In terms of Nolan's filmography I think it's a culmination of everything he's ever done. From him developing his style with Wally Pfister to upgrading to Hoyte Von Hoytema, from his partnership with Cillian Murphy that started with Batman Begins.
It is a classic film epic, it's the type of film that just hits and that will forever be remembered. It is one of those things that will eventually be in the cannon. It is not only beautifully crafted but also highly entertaining and thrilling. Covering something that is historically significant, exploring the psyche of an important individual.
I can go on and on, so I'll just leave it there.
I must be in a very small minority. I disliked Oppenheimer quite a bit. I found it boring throughout, and felt it could be cut down to 100 minutes with almost no loss.
And no, it isn't nearly as good as many films of this century. Off the top of my head, I'd put The Lives of Others, Shoplifters, A Separation, Amelie, and The Departed well ahead of it.
I have owned the 4k disc since release as a blind-buy because of the praise. Not my typical sort of movie nor do I really like Nolan movies. I have been hesitant to watch because of the length - and the length matters because of the subject matter. Do I really want to watch a 3 hour biopic that is about a dude creating a world-ending device of destruction that traumatized my youth?
