    Pokemon TCG Live

so recently a friend got me into the pokeman card game by offering to build me a deck. i grew up on the original 150 and the tv show and collected and all that as a kid, but only ever 'battled' using house rules cause as a 9 year old that handbook was over my damn head. anyway, i learned that you can ~port~ the decks and booster packs you buy to the desktop game, and i've found that the game online is a great teacher for the rules irl. it's nothing fancy or new but it's very fun to reconnect with my kid self....and totally kick other peoples asses w/ my skillz.

    anyone else casually play this?

i feel your experience being ostracized by not conforming to the norm. i saw that American Fiction is an adaptation by a novel from the...90s? by a really interesting sounding experimental writer. if you haven't already you should look him up! his name is Percival Everett

fellow mexican here, can confirm! also...guilty of not being able to speak fluent spanish, but eh, my parents didn't teach me waddya gonna do.

anyway, i feel you so much about this! this lasting (perhaps even growing?) trend of shoe-horning culture into every possible place in fiction work written by latinos to remind the reader that you're latino is so boring. like, i feel like the intention is to be Empowering and Proud of our Heritage, and that's great, but...what are we saying beyond that? yeah, being a minority can suck sometimes and cultural bleed is strange and makes identity messy, we've been talking about this for 50 years. i think i've come to a place of acceptance on it and wanna read/write stories about more specific/nuanced topics about what? i dunno, pick something.

hopefully i don't sound like a nut, but, being a mexican american in los angeles who pays attention to local literature i just need something new. also hopefully not a bad example but here, i think melissa lozada oliva (at least in her poetry) achieves telling beautiful stories while letting you know where she comes from as a minority and not shoving your face in it clumsily: https://eng220oerclone.commons.gc.cuny.edu/melissa-lozada-oliva-yolanda-and-selena-dont-talk-anymore/

i love how in that poem it's like 'if you know you know', but if you don't it's still a terribly beautiful poem. /rant

btw, the 'I went to the pana....' line made me lmao, it seriously is like that.

OP, please do not watch Boogie Nights. imo that movie is the literal opposite of your request, it is about a bunch of broken people bound to each other because of their inability to progress/change. it gets very dark, and there is no redemption in the end. (but it is a damn amazing movie and so well told/made with such fleshed-out characters)

in 1992 this kind of experimental indie pop band Unrest put out Imperial F.F.R.R.

I first heard them by chance. in high school i was looking for nirvana stuff on soulseek. someone mislabeled a song called 'Yes She is My Skinhead Girl' as a nirvana song and i thought the title was hilarious.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDFIgKmSKvA&ab_channel=bekoicons

immediately i was like 'this is NOT nirvana', although now in hind sight i guess i can see how someone would think this is like a nirvana demo or whatever. either way, this introduced me to one of the most inspirational (i make music) bands i've ever heard, and that basically no one gives a shit about. i could probably count on one hand how many times i've met people who know them. i'm so glad for that soulseek mistake.

what i love about their music is how all over the place their stuff is. you can tell its the same band song to song but you know they're always like 'let's fuck around with this thing, make it weird.' and that's basically become my ethos when i make stuff. and the main guy behind it, Mark Robinson, is just like such a freakin' character. he also does like graphic design and stuff. once you see a bit of his work you just know 'this is a mark robinson piece', he has such a distinct style that in my opinion actually the music and the visuals compliment each other. he's very much about precision/intention, even though some stuff may sound amateurishly put together it's supposed to sound like that, which i think is so insane. i love that the album begins with a literal volume reference tone. anyway.

my favorite song on that album is 'i do believe you are blushing'. i love that he relishes the sound of a plain guitar tone, but like emphasizes the mids and treble to make it sound almost like aggressively pristine, in a way its own kind of distortion, but graceful and intensely clean. an example:

anyway. if anyone knows similar sounding bands let me know! hopefully somebody vibes with this cause this is totally my shit

so a while back i stumbled onto the idea of this thing calledhypertext fiction but i kinda wrote it off as an interesting gimmick and forgot about it. but about a week ago i had an idea for a story about memory and racing thoughts that i think would benefit from the form. so i downloaded this program called twine that's specifically for writing these and i've been having a fucking ball learning how to put it together. eventually i want to be able to implement audio files and images and vid clips and just i'm really excited to see what it looks like at the end.

maybe i'm totally off but i also think A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers sorta fits: it's late for me and it's a little complicated, so look it up if you're interested in a sort of memoir about siblings relocating after losing both parents very quickly and a 21yo (main narrator) trying to learn how to raise his younger brother. it was funny and tragic and filled with (sometimes wavering) conviction.

i think Room Temperature by Nicholson Baker is one of my favorite examples of slice of life stuff. it may sound a bit overwhelming, but imagine when something reminds you of something that happened in your past, and then you think about the emotions and other tangential memories related to that initial memory, and instead of getting distracted by having to keep going about your day, you could follow all those tangents to their conclusions. that's a very clunky way of describing how i feel reading some of his writing. what i really love about it though is how earnest it is. the main character just loves all the odd little details of life. it also helps that he seems to have an unlimited vocabulary when it comes to physically describing things. woof, didn't mean to write so much. check his early stuff out, before he got maybe a little too weird!
