It feels really generic? If it wasn't for Claptrap, and a couple of other visual signifiers like the raider mask I'd have no idea this was Borderlands instead of a random buddy/family sci fi action/comedy.
Borderlands was grim, and funny. Borderlands 1.5 was grim and really funny with the expansion of Handsome Jack's backstory. After that it kind of went off the rails in a whole "talk a lot, and maybe it'll be funny" sort of way.
So maybe this movie is a proper inheritor to the series.
Your post may sound a little snarky, but I wholeheartedly agree. The first Borderlands games were full of over-the-top humor and harsh, cynic fatalism. This movie is just a cash grab. I mean, Jack Black as Claptrap could be the dream, but the rest is just... meh.
This looks better than I expected given the troubled production. It doesn't look amazing, but it looks like an ok waste of time when combined with friends and some alcohol or cannabis. Surprisingly, I like Kevin Hart the most here.
It also gives me serious "We have Guardians of the Galaxy at home" vibes.
I loved Borderlands 1 and 2, played so much 2 back in the day and this looks... terrible. I feel like Borderlands has always been kinda silly and lolrandum at some points but Kevin Hart is definitely a choice.
I've been a big fan of the Borderlands games (besides the third, haven't played it), but I somehow missed that there was a movie coming.
I'm cautiously optimistic because Borderlands didn't really have a good or complex story that can be ruined in the translation to the movie.
There are vault hunters, they're looking for a vault, and there are other groups trying to find it first.
The fun of it for me (beyond the gameplay) was the world, aesthetics, and short bits of funny dialogue.
And it seems to me like this has that from what the trailer showed.
Plotwise, Borderlands was at its prime from the intro credits through about Nine-Toes (speaking as someone who only ever played through 1 to completion).
That initial surge of worldbuilding was just immense, and the first areas just had that extra polish that felt missing in the rest.
My wife and I, now pushing 40, still shout "Catch a Ride!" far more than any normal couple should.
I'm keeping my expectations low. Better to be surprised by good movie then to be let down by good franchise-turned-shit on big screen. Let's see how this one plays out (pun intended).
Looks better than expected, not really sure what Kevin Hart is doing in something like this. That's the only part that really doesn't make sense to me.
Looks more like they wanted to make a Tank Girl but couldn't get the rights.
I don’t think anyone wants to make a Tank Girl
You're right. Tank Girl is perfect in every way and there's no way a reboot could improve it.
It'd be like remaking "The Super Mario Bros." You could, but you really shouldn't.
(Yes the old Mario movie is better, there...I said it, I'll show myself out)
I saw Tank Girl, I thought it was fine. I like Talalay’s episodes of Doctor Who though.
To be clear, there was no sarcasm in my comment.
Genuinely love Tank Girl. The new super mario movie was a faithful fanservice film that was, IMO, less fun than the drug-addled fever dream that the first one was.
I didn’t assume sarcasm lol. I know it’s a cult classic, Mario on the other hand…
I blame text...it's hard to read tone sometimes. I wasn't even 100% sure of myself when I reread my post like 5 min later.
Also I'll leave this here.
I don't know, if we could have a rehash of 1995 film I would be so into it. Either with a new actress (I can think of a dozen that would fit, Margot Robbie being ideal, or Samara Weaving) or even have Lori Petty reprise an older version, would be excellent.
Ah, looks like there IS a Margot Robbie attached Tank Girl stuck in pre-production . Rad.
This has been a production nightmare. Initial production wrapped in 2021 with Eli Roth as the director. The film went though extensive reshoots in 2023 with Tim Miller at the helm.
I think the trailer looks better than I thought it would but I’m not confident this will be good.
Been playing Borderlands since 2010. First game I ever beat with my best friend. Definitely the franchise I have the most hours in.
I've never seen a less necessary film. It seems so off that it might not even upset me when I watch it. I can totally forgive all of the age discrepancies, except for Lilith. I just don't like how Cate Blanchett looks in this. I can dig a 60 year old Tannis, I'm cool with a 5'2" Roland, but it seems like they tried to make Cate Blanchett look younger than she is, and it gives her an uncanny valley feel for me. Aside from the characters, it looks really good. I can't wait to pirate it.
