I mean, yeah, say what you will about Cruise personally (I try to avoid supporting him where I can due to Scientology and such) but he's almost always an entertaining watch. If a movie of his is on in a waiting room, airplane or the like, I'll usually have a watch. I've never had the highs and lows of other actors but consistently enjoyable.

Agreed: for as much of a whack job I think he is irl, the guy is an amazing actor and has a lot of great movies to his name.

Amazing actor? Ehh he’s okay. He’s got a ton of charisma and is very fun to watch, but he isn’t doing a ton of capital-A Acting.

If nothing else you’ve got to admire his work ethic and commitment to upping the stakes of his stunt work. But yeah, I’m pretty surprised the Scientology thing hasn’t really harmed his reputation...

But yeah, I’m pretty surprised the Scientology thing hasn’t really harmed his reputation in significant ways, not to mention past episodes of crazy like his whole Oprah couch-jumping thing.

Tom Cruise is one of a handful of actors that will get me to watch a movie only because he’s in it. Not only is he a joy to watch - the man has impeccable taste in choosing scripts. I can’t think of a bad movie he’s been in since the 90s. I’ll always see what he’s putting out, and I always enjoy it - it’s just not great acting.

I think it’s the same with a lot of moviegoers. He has a lot of strong qualities that allow him to overcome controversy (and give him industry staying power even after so many decades) in a way that few, if any, other celebrities can match.

I am very much in the camp of 'separate the art from the artist'. I'm excited for Cruise to leave or lessen this horrible 'stunt man' era. I thought Top Gun: Maverick was crap and the last few Mission Impossible films have had cool stunts, but lack overall.

I'm hoping we can get back to Vanilla Sky, Eyes Wide Shut, The Color of Money, etc level of films.

This is what I said. I am also well aware of Scientology, SeaLab, Shelly, and more.

I think House of Cards not being very good has nothing to do with Spacey.

Would you still separate the art from the artist if Cruise were a Nazi or a pedophile?

These feel like very different things.

Being a Scientologist (assuming you aren't actively engaging in the harm the church perpetrates) just isn't on the level of being a Nazi or a pedophile. We may as well boycott any Catholic actor due to the actions (or inaction as it sometimes is) that the church perpetrated historically and in the modern era.

        Hmm... Yes. I would.

There's this manga series that I used to read as a kid. One I own all the volumes of and has been something I've always thoroughly enjoyed even up until recently, when it was re-adapted into a show.

With the resurgence of the show a good twenty years, going on twenty five, after the book story ended, it got the series back into the limelight which led to me learning twenty years down the line that the author is an unrepentant pedophile.

Awful stuff. But it doesn't diminish what enjoyment I've had from the actual art for literal decades. If anything, having that spoiled would be a win for that horrible human being.

What changed is that I now tell people this before they dive into it, so they themselves can decide how (or even if) they want to consume the content.

Even so, the art never changed. It's still the same lines and dialogue, and those lines and dialogue are still good.

To bring it back to Cruise. I doubt my parents know he's a Scientologist. Does that make the art better or worse?

I remember about 20 years ago when his reputation as a weirdo was probably at its peak that someone in the film industry was asked why he kept getting so much work. The reply was something like, “He shows up on time, he learns his lines, he takes direction, he hits his marks, and he treats the crew respectfully. You’d be amazed how many actors don’t do any of those things.”
