Sounds like a fun way to get through some movies you've had on your list. And some great picks!
I've tried something similar before and found it a bit too restrictive. My mood and energy level frequently dictates my choice for a film at home.
These days what I prefer is creating movie challenge lists on letterboxd. For example, for this month my challenge is A24PRIL and I have 12 A24 films to watch. This way I still dedicate myself to several to watch, but don't treat myself too harshly if that evening I'm no longer in the mood to watch something. It also gives me a few to pick from in the beginning.
I don't really have responsibilities the way you lot have, namely I don't have children which helps a lot.
But, when I did try to schedule in advance it just never worked that way for me. I also find when I force myself to watch something I'm not in the mood for, I struggle to pay attention. Whenever I just want to watch a movie and put that movie on right away, I don't struggle.
The last time I ever did like a specific, "I'm gonna watch these types of films" was when I did a horror marathon the week of Halloween 2020. Horror is kind of a blind spot of mine overall so that was pretty helpful, I watched Alien, The Thing, Audition, and Silence of the Lambs.
oh nice -- that's a fun way to do it. Without an approach like this, the sheer amount of quality media out there is overwhelming.
If you're into podcasts, A24 has a good one that comes out sporadically.
This is a pretty neat idea. I had a somewhat similar system, though not as elaborate as this one, when I realized I was going through a paradox of choice and spending way too much time deciding on what film to watch rather than just watch it.
I had a text file filled with all the films I had in my Letterboxd watchlist and created an iOS shortcut that'd randomly pick a title when I ran it. So I'd just ask my phone, "What should I watch today?" and it'd give me an answer. I treated it like the law, too. If it ended up outputting Out 1 as it once did, Out 1 it was. I don't use it anymore because I don't have much time but for a few years it worked well.
this is what was killing me. Every time I go to watch a movie I want to watch one of the following
I love the idea of a randomizer. Its a nice quick and dirty solve.
That is a fun way to watch some movies that you want to watch.
Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite anime movies/franchises. I have the Laughing Man Saga (which the movie take place during) in both the first series and movie.
that was one i watched ages ago. i don’t watch a lot of anime, but this type of stuff is great. anything similar i should add?
Akira (1988), which is more iconic than Ghost in the Shell. But it is more weird than Ghost, but since you have Paprika on the list, you should be fine.
Edit: not in the same vein but the German film Das Boot (1982) is pretty good and is considered to be a classic (West) German film.
Do you have any hairs in your nose?
good call re: Das Boot! I've seen Akira a few times -- one of a handful of anime (The Wind Rises etc.. the standards.) Its such a blindspot for me.
Not sure why, but I always thought Das Boot was older.
If you don't mind watching a movie only once (and never again, as in really never again in what the movie depicts and watching it again), Graveyard of the Fireflies (1988). It is depressing, but it is beautifully done. But you really cannot go wrong with any of the Studio Ghilbi's movies, especially the ones that Hayao Miyazaki directed. My personal favorites is Poco Rosso (1992) and Princess Mononoke (1997). Bit more uplifting than Fireflies, and a bit more silly in the animation sense. But both are serious in their own right.
Graveyard of the Fireflies is such a powerful film. I almost tear up whenever I see the title. I do however sort of want to see it again, but preferably with someone else this time. Tough film to watch alone while the family is asleep.
oddly enough, I added Graveyard of the Fireflies today --- August 13th! Princess Mononoke is the exact reason I'm doing this. I've had it downloaded for probably half a decade now -- its awful. I'll add Poco Rosso, too. solid picks!
Actually, can you proof this list for me? I don't have a lot of anime in my overall movie sheet (want to watch, have watched, etc). Are these worth watching?
The only ones that I have not yet are Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Girl Who Leapt Through Time, the Secret World of Arrietty and Millennium Actress. So I really can't say if they are worth it, but for Nausicaä, it is one of two pre-Ghilbi Hayao Miyazaki films. And people do like it.
But I have seen the others and yes they are worth it. Has I had said in my other post Porch Rosso and Princess Mononoke are two of my favorites. Castle in the Sky is another favorite, so yes it is worth it. And the others are worth seeing at least once. Just have tissues on hand for Wolf Children.
awesome! thanks so much. This is such a blindspot for me.
No problem, glad to be of help.
I have no affiliation beyond being a happy user, but I really like Just Watch for things like this. It lets you set up a watchlist of movies (and TV shows) across different streaming services, and then it will tell you when they become available. That way you can pick from "what's on my to-watch list and available on my streaming services" instead of just browsing whatever the streaming service is pushing on you.
Letterboxd integrates JustWatch with movie entries and you can also create lists which can be filtered by specific services. You can also set defaults for the ones you currently use.
Great list! Hope you're able to stick to it.
If you have a list you can programmatically make an ICS file which you can import to Google Calendar pretty easily. I do a similar thing but for places around the world:
https://github.com/chapmanjacobd/everydayvirtualvacation/blob/main/cal.py
edit: ah I see your linked post. It would be cool if you could share the ICS file
save this as the ics and it should go -- link
I tried to pastebin it but pastebin said it was offensive and had to be private.. kind of weird.
I'm hesitant to host it since I'm always moving stuff around. If that paste doesn't work, I'll send you the proper.
super quick edit: that script is slick.
That is an impressive list of great movies!
I just have my unstructured watchlist on Letterboxd and then a shorter list with stuff I intend to watch in the following week or so. But nothing that can stick to a tight schedule as mood or other factors might change from day to day, like if I have time for a 90 minute or 150 minute movie.
I haven't been able to stick to a "challenge" theme with certain restrictions within a month. I jump around too much from day to day. The movie of the week thing we run here is the closest I get to that.
that's a pretty good list. Of that list, I'd prioritize The Sting, First Cow, and Certain Women. Blackberry was pretty good -- especially if you watch Sunny. Glenn gives a really strong performance and its nice to see him outside of his typical Sunny / AP Bio mode.
We Need to Talk About Kevin was pretty good -- but fuck that guy. :)
The Sting is one of my all time favorites. I'd double that with The Hot Rock, which is another fun caper with Redford.
If you find yourself uninterested in the movie, will you give it 10-30 minutes, or are you going to try to force yourself to watch the entire thing?
if a film is well-reviewed, I'll usually stick with it. Sometimes I'll be watching something and I get to a point where I'm like, 'okay Altman, I get it' -- which is what happened with Short Cuts. Eventually I'll go back and finish it, but its a bit much.
The only reason I'll go back to that is because it was an influence for Magnolia. If I didn't love Magnolia so much, I'd never think of Short Cuts again.
I bail on more commentary tracks. When it sounds like the person is going to be watching the movie and basically describing the scenes without any insight... I'm out.
I find, no matter how highly reviewed, if I don't like it in the first 10-30 minutes, I am never going to like it.
So I have started to force myself to watch the queue of movies that are highly rated, but only for the first 10 minutes or so.
If I don't like it, I move onto a guilty pleasure, like Zatoichi.
Zatoichi is awesome! I'm more into kung fu like The Mystery of Chess Boxing (of which I have compiled the best copy if you want it), Shaolin vs Wu-Tang, etc etc. I also like Lone Wolf and Cub etc. There is no guilt in pleasure.
thanks, but I tend to be extremely conservative when it comes to watching movies, I mostly rely on streaming services and DVDs from the local library.
