Anyone see any good documentaries lately?
I just watch the first film in the Qatsi trilogy today and I was blown away. Philip Glass is a master... Anyways looking for any recommendations.

I just re-watched hypernormalisation after seeing someone talking about it on discord. It's very well done but quite long. There's titlecard style interlude things, so I usually just watch it in chunks which is a good idea since it can get quite information dense at points. There's certainly an atmosphere to this doc which might lull you into forgetting it's quite political.

And there's this one about chernobyl. one of the best ones I've seen so far due to its use of origional footage/sources whenever possible. It's also quite awe inspiring when they're talking about the cleanup efforts. I always forget the timescales they operated in, too. in my head it was just a normal construction project, but then they talk about using helicopters to shuttle things back and forth and needing to have a stupid amount of manpower directed and transported all as fast as possibyl.
Netflix has a great documentary about OKC that doesn’t glorify McVeigh at all. It actually provides a context for why the bombings happened. I would check it out it’s very good.
Thanks I'll check it out!
Did you see the series they put out called 'Evil Genius'? It was very well done.
Was it Netflix produced? PBS brought out the big guns for the OKC documentary. Do you like English comedy?
It was a Netflix original, yes. The duplass brothers were executive producers if that means anything to you. And yes I do.
Check out Tony Robbins on YouTube. He’s very charming. If you search Birth of Britain you’ll see him. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aBWJZBdWug0
This man. I hope you like him.
I recently watched The Keepers on Netflix and it was pretty interesting
If you like the Qatsi trilogy you may enjoy Chronos, Baraka, and Samsara. All very beautiful pieces.
As for what I've watched recently, I saw a netflix documentary series called Wild Wild Country. It's about a new-age guru who started a cult, ended up buying a large amount of property in Oregon and basically set up their own little city, driving out the locals. It was good. Pretty crazy story actually.
Wild wild country is fantastic!
The century of the self.
A must see to know how psychology influence our decision making, from buying something to choosing a president for the country. It's about how people can be manipulated. I used to thought subliminal messaging is only today's thing, but it's frightening how far back it goes.
In that vein, I recently watched, Score, and it was a really enjoyable film.
I love Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Encounters at the End of the World, Happy People, and pretty much any of the other Werner Herzog docs. I wasn’t as big a fan of Into the Inferno and Lo and Behold, but even those are really interesting.
I can't watch Herzog documentaries anymore after he did a voice for a Rick And Morty episode. Every twenty minutes I start giggling.
I’ve never seen Rick and Morty. There, I’ve just outed myself.
It's got some very good moments, and some episodes are very well written. If you can manage to ignore the edgy family-guy-type humor and are a fan of scifi tropes you might enjoy it.
I love Werner - Happy People is one of my favorites, I've watched it numerous times.
Man, his narration is so great. That spooky and unique German voice of his is compelling.
Le Mans is coming up, so it's always worth giving a shout out to 'Truth in 24', one of the best racing films ever made (all the better because it's real).
I'm in a film studies course right now. We watched Catfish last week. It's so well done I wouldn't be surprised if some of it was staged.
Fed Up was really good in my opinion. It talks about the sugar industry and how they control the government to their will
I just watched The Defiant Ones, a HBO series about the rise and rise of Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine. Really interesting stuff, they're both fascinating guys who have had a massive influence on the modern world. It's been around for a while but I only just found time to watch it.
Planet Ocean (2012)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2240784/
A beautifully shot nature documentary which tells a visual tale of ocean ecosystems and human societies' impact on them.
Worth a watch for the cinematography alone.
Tickled: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5278506/
It's a relatively new documentary which tells a fascinating story with many twists in the middle. I was at the edge of my seat most of the time.
Icarus and Citizenfour are also fantastic. Citizenfour (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4044364/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) I'm quite sure will be shown in schools decades from now as a way to understand our decade.
James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction is pretty interesting, focusing mainly on films, with several directors, actors and critics talking about a bunch of different movies. Extra Credits also has a nice ongoing series on sci-fi focused on books.
The Push about peer pressure and manipulation is also very good, a group of people try to take someone to the point of killing a man. It reminded me of The game of death (I can't find a link with English subs, sorry).
Also The Jinx on Netflix was really terrifying.
EDIT: I'm also rewatching The Wire now, which is the most documentary-like fictional series I've ever seen.
