Some thoughts:
Sing Sing underperformed here despite doing well with critic awards. Missing supporting actor, screenplay, and drama which were all expected. September 5 took its spot in drama (which was wildly surprising).
Dune Part Two misses director, this along with the NBR snub signals that Dune 2 is a bottom 5 picture contender rather than the top 5 the first one was (this is despite having more acclaim and higher box office).
A Real Pain and The Substance are really strong contenders. The Substance especially is interesting considering it’s a body horror exploitation film, but its following on social media has certainly helped pick up stronger than expected awards buzz. I think Substance can go all the way and get nominations at the Oscar’s for Picture, Lead Actress, Supporting Actress, and Original Screenplay.
I'll be honest, I don't really understand the Emilia Perez love. I thought it was an absolute mess of a movie.
Yeah I agree it’s a terrible movie. It’s gotten a lot of industry love since its Cannes premiere earlier this year. It’s a pretty flashy movie in all aspects so I guess that explains why it’s racking up all these awards.
I'm just blaming all of this on the french then, I guess
Seems like you're not alone. By all accounts online it has middling reviews
Yeah, I'm not the only one!
With a lot of awards movies (Green Book,, CODA, etc), even if I don't like them I can usually understand at least why other people/the academy/other awards bodies do, but this one beats me. I just don't get it at all, it's a mess.
