I thought it was weird that they wanted to basically adapt an 8 hour long movie into a 2 hour movie but this idea is super cool! I don't know why it's related to the game in any way but I think I'd prefer something like this, rather than a recreation of the game. Though it kinda feels more like they should probalby be calling it something else, even though the whole premise is still technically Until Dawn lol.

I'm not necessarily saying that's what happened here, but that could be what's causing the disconnect you're describing. Especially because there's definitely no shortage of horror scripts lying around, and the trope of reliving the same day over and over again is practically a favorite Hollywood pastime.
