From a cynical perspective, if it's bad it's a final nostaglia cashout and if it's good they can keep milking it for at least another movie. Waiting long enough for the original kids watching shrek to grow up and have kids who they will hopefully take to the new film and implant that love for the IP in the new generation. From an executive perspective i can kind of see it, from a creative perspective it seems a little sad to me. Im a big believer in letting properties die when they have run their course.
