I am curious what a Taika Waititi Guardians movie would look like though.
Was he rumored to direct it?
Taika's Ragnarok was... hoo boy, something. It was all sorts of fantastic, in its own, unique way – not even goofy, but silly in a strikingly-different manner. Sincere, I suppose? Not shying away from anything it wanted to say.
For some reason, I feel like Guardians III under Taika would've turned to fantasy of some sort. The crew would've emergency-landed on a planet filled with various magical creatures, and their resolvement of their ability to fly back up would've been through a close look at what, exactly, is happening there. Just to shake things up, they'd have no gizmos and would have to rely entirely on their innate talents and skills.
For what it's worth (though I can't find a source at the moment), I believe James Gunn's script was always going to be used, even when he was removed as director.

There was a bit of a conspiracy theory going around that Disney really didn't want to deal with this during the Fox Merger, and now that it's pretty much wrapping up, they were clear to announce it so that it didn't become a political football. I'm sure it's a nice convenience, but probably not the main driver of events.

The report says this was done months ago between Alan Horn and Gunn. I think it’s pretty big of Horn to admit that he was wrong and rehired Gunn.
I thought warner had hired him for dcmu movies?
He's still in for Suicide Squad 2 as far as I know.
