I thought 'Wonder Woman' already showed Hollywood that people would go see woman-led superhero movies. What does 'Captain Marvel' do for this perception that 'Wonder Woman' didn't? Of course,...

Success for the movie could encourage Hollywood executives to greenlight more woman-led superhero movies or stories featuring women heroes; if it had failed, it could have been used as an excuse to not make woman-led superhero movies, under the logic that people won’t go see them.

I thought 'Wonder Woman' already showed Hollywood that people would go see woman-led superhero movies. What does 'Captain Marvel' do for this perception that 'Wonder Woman' didn't? Of course, having two successful movies about women superheroes proves that the first wasn't a fluke, but the first still demonstrated that woman-led superhero movies can be successful.

Captain Marvel has no such anchor. The MCU, by and large, has been incredibly successful, significantly more so than the DCEU, and Captain Marvel's place as the first female led film in the MCU has the MCU's sterling reputation going for it along with being a set up for one of the most anticipated films in movie history. Especially since Captain Marvel is, I think, going to take Iron Man's place as the flagship hero of the next phase of the MCU.

This is a foreign concept to me. When I see Movie B, I don't decide it's bad because it's linked to Movie A which I didn't like. I decide whether I like Movie B on its own merits. For example: I don't decide, because one Star Trek movie was an absolute abomination which should be burned and erased from history, that any good movies in the Star Trek franchise must be dragged down by association. Those good movies are still good, regardless of the abomination.

Thanks for explaining that. That's so alien to me (pun intended), I would never have worked it out on my own.

I know right? People are just pretending Wonder Woman never happened, like wtf.

Captain Marvel has 760 million reasons not to listen to trolls.

What? Something riding on the coattails of a series does NOT mean it isn't absolute garbage.

They took ZERO risks with this movie. It is the blandest, most boring example of capeshit you have ever seen. And this is coming from someone who loves capeshit. It is just cliche rolling on to expected outcome rolling on to 'let's use CGI to make them forget the fact we forgot to write it well, that's a good trick'.

Ticket sales mean jack in a world of sequels, just look at Star Wars.

Ninja edit: I much prefer this other Vox article (the headline at least): Marvel bids farewell to the original Avengers by introducing new, vaguely similar ones.

If it was just riding the high from Infinity War, wouldn't that have happened with Ant-Man and the Wasp?

What was different and struck a chord with people? Well, having a woman on screen is obviously part of it, Marvel has been underserving audiences who have shown yet again that they'll open up the second they're thrown a bone. But beyond that, it's the first MCU movie that felt genuinely pleasant and even sweet. There's a bit of Marvel quipping of course, but this movie does a great job at making characters feel warm and like they actually enjoy being together. It's a good ol playful time, and even when it gets serious with the skrull plot...well it's far from boundary pushing for movies as a whole, but it holds a really good moral line compared to others in its genre. Samuel L Jackson got to be more fun than I've seen him be in a long time. The soundtrack matched that fun and warmth and is probably the best they've had outside of maybe the Guardians movies. There's a lot to like! Even though I've learned to approach the MCU less like I would other movies and more like I would a light serial, I left the theater for this one not thinking about the state of the universe or how this impacts the MCU as a whole, but with a warm heart both because of that kindness between characters and because basic "girl power" has been uncool for long enough now that it's actually a bit refreshing to see again. You know, in a way that makes me feel empowered, not whatever the fuck Wonder Woman was.

Captian Marvel really got me invested in the MCU again. I don't mean to tell you that you should feel differently about the quality of the film, of course, but it appeals to people in a way other than being yet another Marvel movie.

There's a lot of things wrong with it, imo it fails in nearly every way a movie can and my critical eye toward its supposed feminist empowerment is naturally a bit more intense when that's the only possible redeeming quality of it as a whole.

There's specific things that I don't remember in detail anymore (the movie didn't make much of an impression other than "I hate it!") but can find articles on, like how they specifically went with an origin story that makes her greatness the work of men, but really what got me were more general things. It's so focused on her sex appeal and how she's alluring to everyone she ever meets. It's shot in a way that squeezes out just as much male-gazey pleasure as any other Hollywood film. It positions the viewer with the men in the cast a strange amount for a movie starring and directed by women. It's the same horny as fuck objectifying thing we've always had, except now it's horny for a woman with a little bit of muscle.

I'm used to media not being particularly feminist and can like things despite that, but when an otherwise atrocious movie gets so much praise for supposedly being an empowering big deal and all that really means is "it has a woman", it puts a really bad taste in my mouth. Even a basic "girl power, yay!!!" movie is better than the slightly toned-down Catwoman we got in Wonder Woman.

For me, the final fight scene encompasses what was wrong with WW. It fell into the DC Cinematic Universe trap of trying too hard to look dramatic and epic, only to end up being cheesy/cringy.
First, it looks like an instagram filter was put over the whole thing.
Second, there’s so much slo-mo. After WW defeats the bad guy, there’s like a whole minute of soldiers crying and looking up at WW as she stands there with an expressionless face.
Third, the pacing was terrible. WW hits bad guy and he flies backwards thru the air. Stop. Slo-mo. Dialogue. Bad guy hits WW and she flies backwards thru the air. Stop. Slo-mo. Dialogue. Repeat. When WW finally deals the final blow by absorbing and then dispersing electricity, she gives this weird smirk that takes a beat too long and then kills him, ruining any power of that moment.

I’m glad that we are trying to give little girls female superheroes to look up to and such, but IMO WW was objectively bad, which is a shame.

Because the first Ant-Man was utter garbage. The first Ant-Man did rather well (within the scale of what 'well' meant for an MCU movie at the time). Now, I'm not saying Captain Marvel II will do as relatively badly as Ant-Man and the Wasp, mainly because Captain Marvel I was worlds better than Ant-Man. But there's 'tracks' so to speak in the MCU and they cross-influence. New starters get a HUGE boost, which is the whole reason the MCU is what gets the funding and not original stories.

I'm a dude, yes, but I enjoy movies with female protagonists as much as male. One issue I find with pretty much all of Marvel's diversity pushing films is they SCREAM tokenism. They can't have a black protagonist, they have to have A Black Protagonist, and make the entire film revolve around the fact that hey, look, we're doing the diversity thing! Which cheapens it terribly.

But that isn't really the issue I have with Captain Marvel, the issue is it is a carbon copy at a time they had license to do something new.

I don't really understand the hate this movie has gotten from some people, sure it isn't the greatest movie ever made, but I still enjoyed it and everyone who I've spoke to has enjoyed it as well.

This movie was riding the success of every previous MCU movie in addition to Wonder Woman. Even if it were terrible, it was still going to be a great comercial success.
