K-pop thread

There's a whole lotta normal music threads, but kpop seems more popular recently.

Any songs that people like? Any comebacks you're excited for?

I've just recently started getting into kpop again. Here are some songs that have been trapped in my head:

    OMG - newjeans (so catchy)
    hurt - newjeans
hypeboy - new jeans (the lyrics to this make no sense)
Thirsty - aespa (beautiful singing voice)
    cupid - FIFTY FIFTY

I've never delved into K-pop beyond the odd song, but I heard FIFTY FIFTY's 'Cupid' by virtue of it being in the global top 10 on Spotify at the moment, and it's unbelievable just how catchy it is! There's truly an art to writing songs which get - as you put it - trapped in your head, and this is a great example. I had to force myself to stop listening to it and move on to other songs, which is just incredible really!

There's something about K-pop (and J-pop, incidentally) that manages to pull me in, in a way all the other songs at the top of the charts right now from other regions just don't manage. I think often they have a more 'old fashioned' way of composing songs, in that there's more going on in terms of chord sequences, which is more akin to western pop music from the 1980s than that of the present day. For instance, 'Cupid' uses a very classically 'jazzy' chord sequence (chorus: Dm7 G Cmaj7 Am7), as does a lot of east Asian pop. And it goes without saying that it has a very catchy melody too - and thus overall it sticks in my head very easily!

Yeah omg is super catchy. Looove the harmony parts where it goes down 3 notes. Thoughts on rising by tripleS?

I had never heard it before, but it is pretty catchy. Seems like they are one of those bands with a comically large amount of members LOL

GFriend is great! Sad I only heard about them after they disbanded but they've got a lot of great songs besides MAGO like Apple, and Better Me

Le Sserafim's Unforgiven Album has been on repeat for me, it's just way too catchy. I was an old SNSD fan, but I've been really enjoying the "new edgy" kind of kpop that's been coming out recently...

It's fine but... Personally I think so much English and the way it sounds makes it indistinguishable from normal western music.

Someone tried to get me into k-pop a year or two ago, and I'm pretty sad to say that the only song I liked, out of everything she showed me, was Sunmi - Pporappippam. Was wondering if any k-pop-heads here have recommendations like this song?

Both Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga have an incredible vocal talents but neither are professional dancers in the same way that most kpop acts train for. You'd do better comparing Blackpink to acts like June's Diary or Boys World. Although Blackpink are still better, but that's because Blackpink can do no wrong.
