Been digging into John Zorn's catalog since it just got added to streaming services, there is a ton there to sort through. There's so much there and I've only scratched the surface, but I've been focusing so far on his less "outside" stuff. My favorite album so far is Gnosis: the Inner Light, which is just a lot of amazingly beautiful chamber music. Another standout is New Masada Quartet, featuring Julian Lage, a hugely talented jazz guitarist. I'd like to check out his earlier stuff like Naked City, which isn't on streaming yet, so I may have to go the old fashioned route.

I've been listening to ONSET - Tenchio on repeat for the last week. I love the crazy blend of genres here. Feels like Post-Hardcore/Emo/J-Rock. Love the vocal effects (I don't mind autotune/similar effects when it sounds good, like this song), I love how busy the track is, all the little bits going on behind the more prominent sounds. He gives some love to the bass guitar too, which I always appreciate. I'm hyped to hear more from this guy. Don't like his previous work too much, but if this is a new direction he's going in, I can't wait for more.

I have been listening to the album The New Transistor Heroes by BIS. It's a good album, and I particularly like the songs Mr. Important or Everybody Thinks That They're Gonna Get Theirs.

And, they just released a new EP today!

They scratch that nostalgia itch for me while still bringing something fresh to the genre(s).

I don't believe they have a huge following, but I've been enjoying all their songs heavily and recommend them highly (for whatever that's worth!).

I just picked up Josh Ritter's (Americana, indie folk) new album Spectral Lines on a local record-store-exclusive purple-and-white vinyl. I absolutely love this album, as it's much more introspective and reflective than his last few albums. The last three tracks (starting with "Any Way they Come") blend together into a an ethereal medley; here's a playlist of the whole album: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLn6V7QNeK4nEYSzjfPWUUnZnCelEEtn-0

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cure_for_Sanity

    and

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Magic_Orchestra_(album)

which has a few amazing songs for a synth album at that time (as influential as Kraftwerk) but Firecracker(ファイアークラッカー)"

    https://songwhip.com/yellowmagicorchestra/fire-cracker

takes an orientalist novelty song that pissed off the founders of YMO because it was cultural appropriation and just destroys it by doing a cover bigger and better than the original, the whole second side starting with "Tong Poo" (東風) takes me on a journey

    https://songwhip.com/yellowmagicorchestra/tong-poo-special-dj-copy

And yeah, music in the car is getting stale, don't tell my wife I am listening to a lot of the early Frank Zappa like

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freak_Out!

which is amazing, almost forgotten psychedelia.

Are you possibly a fan of Mr. Bungle? If you're going Zappa, you may enjoy their album California

I’ve been going through Jimmy Buffett’s albums, and the song that stood out most to me is God’s Own Drunk. It’s a long, funny story put to a bluesy song, and you see Jimmy’s extraordinary charisma...

I listened to the first song on the new Drake album, heard him simultaneously call his previous partner a bitch and disregard her claims that she needed to treat her better, and then closed tidal. I don't even know the drama, but it's titled "for the dogs", and it just seems like incel music. "That's enough new music for me today" I said to myself, then worked in silence.

Also Shade Empires Sunholy. Grandiose metal that combines so many genres and expressions. Different and immersive and of course Finnish too.

I found a new jazz band I really like from a local jazz radio station that I have been listening to lately. The Extended Trio reign from New Orleans and the talent is amazing.
