It's America, they could release it at practically any point and it'll be associated with some sort of tragedy (likely mass shooting). Which, I guess, is part of the point.

As for the song itself, not knowing who it was when it came on the radio, at first I thought it sounded like someone influenced by American Idiot era Green Day.
Yeah, I heard a lot of American Idiot and Basket Case in this one. I guess Green Day is allowed to copy its own notes, but playing the hits when you're a punk band doesn't feel very punk.

Do we even count Green Day as punk anymore? Not in a 'no true Scotsman' way, just I can't really think that if I'd heard post-21st Century Breakdown Green Day I'd have ever classified them as...

Not in a 'no true Scotsman' way, just I can't really think that if I'd heard post-21st Century Breakdown Green Day I'd have ever classified them as 'Punk', maybe pop-punk at most. Like, maybe just Rock instead? American Rock? I dunno. I heard them a while back playing at a hockey game and thought they were a generic arena rock band until I realized that Billie was leading the band and I thought "oh shit, that's Green Day."
When people argue punk on the internet, we all lose, but let's agree that Green Day has kind of transformed into a Dad Rock cover band of themselves, and that kind of affects the message a little.

The timing of that release with yet another mass shooting. Oof.

Yep, the record consecutive of days without a mass shooting in the USA in 2023 is 4.

I'm going to use that in the future! I think it essentially sums up a lot of bands who I struggle classifying after their first few albums.
