Also on Nebula. Is it weird that I really like She Keeps Me Up?

I don't think it's weird to like any one Nickelback song. They're so formulaic in their production and sound that at least one is going to tickle any one person's fancy at any given time. I do...

I do think it's weird to like Nickelback as a whole. I've liked a song or two of theirs at various points in my life but they're far from consistent or, to me, really any good overall.

I'm excited to hear Todd's thoughts as well.

I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. If you fucking like something, like it. That’s what’s wrong with our generation: that residual punk rock guilt, like, “You’re not supposed to like that. That’s not fucking cool.” Don’t fucking think it’s not cool to like Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” It is cool to like Britney Spears’ “Toxic”! Why the fuck not? Fuck you! That’s who I am, goddamn it! That whole guilty pleasure thing is full of fucking shit.

Which also reminds me of something Pete Weber said.

You shouldn't feel awkward. I'm personally not the biggest fan of their music, but Nickelback are supposedly pretty decent dudes, and IMO are surprisingly good live too. I've seen them a couple times at various music festivals over they years up here in Canada, (e.g. Edgefest, NXNE), and once headlining a smaller concert with 3 Doors Down, and a few other less famous 90s alt-rock bands. And Nickelback has put on consistently solid performances every time I've seen them, which I can't say the same of quite a few other more "respectable to be a fan of" bands. E.g. The only time I've gotten to see Tool live, they showed up super late despite being the headliners, played a super shortened set, kinda sucked, and then they fucked off immediately afterwards, no encore. I still absolutely love Tool, Maynard, and A Perfect Circle, but seeing Tool live like that was incredibly disappointing. :( I have yet to be disappointed by Nickelback though. Their music is what it is, love it or hate it, but they play it well and put on a consistently good show.

p.s. They recently did an interview with Nardwuar, which is worth a watch even if you're not a fan of theirs, IMO:
          Nardwuar vs. Nickelback

And any band that treats Nardwuar well, and is a fan of his, is okay in my books.

They said something along the lines of "We know it isn't groundbreaking music. We got into this to make music that would be played at strip clubs and here we are making music that is played at strip clubs." I appreciated the honesty.

Plenty of classic rock bands do the same thing. ACDC being an absolutely prime example of this.

They know their audience, make music for their audience, and put on shows to fit that audience. Nothing wrong with that.

That's a great comparison too. Nickelback really is basically the Millennial version of ACDC. I wonder if ACDC fans in the 70s got as much shit as Nickelback fans do today though. I doubt it.

There was wonderfully little embracing of weird culture in the 2010s for the alternative scene in the UK.

I have seen an entire dance floor of metal heads, who were pounding away in a pit to Slayer and Chimaira go to doing the macarena to Switchback by Celldweller or the metal remake of "Barbie Girl"

There were detractors of "That's not metal", but no-one fucking listened. Dave, as usual, speaks the damn truth. If you love listening to something? Goddamn listen and ignore absolutely anyone else. I am fond of "This is how you remind me" and "Photograph" for some absolutely outstanding memories I have to those two songs.

Though if anyone sings 'Rockstar' at me, I'm calling the Hague... that was played RELENTLESSLY in my teens and twenties and I wish I had a time machine to undo the mental damage it did.

The guy's got a point. (And I also really like Toxic. Great song.)
