Dude has talent but I just can't listen to him anymore after he did that Chris Brown collab. A lot of his humor hits different after that.

I don't think we would be hearing this song right now if he hadn't done the collaboration with Brown. He was gaining popularity but that song really catapulted him into actual stardom.

Obviously it's problematic as hell, but if you really close your eyes and imagine, you can see how tempting it would be to just look past it in exchange for your big break. Probably easy to rationalize as Brown making a mistake, especially if you haven't read the police report (which is horrific by the way).

Not excusing him though, and I actually have a few other gripes with Dave's choices over the years. He seems to be grappling with these mistakes via his TV show, which is pretty self-critical.

Time will tell. We will have to see if he demonstrates any kind of real growth. It'll be extremely hard for his career though. He really boxed himself into a career where his success relies upon jokes about race and sex that are cheap and/or toe the line. It's hard to say when the frat humor stops being funny. I've never been one to call a topic too ugly to joke about. I personally think every topic, and I do mean every topic, can be funny if approached with tact. But Dave hasn't always used tact and he's revisited some of these jokes too often in my opinion.

Oops, submitted the wrong link. Meant to link to Harrison Ave. I Love Myself (which I accidentally linked to) is pretty good too though, IMO.

I’m confused. I’ve watched the Dave tv series which follows the exploits of “lil dicky” and there was indeed an episode that related to this video. And now (months later?) the video is released in YouTube IRL by “lil dicky” which I thought was a fictional character. Can someone explain? Is this just an ad for the tv show? Is the actor/rapper real both in the work of fiction and IRL? If so, who owns all the IP?

Lil Dicky is the stage name of David Burd. He’s been a rapper publicly since like 2013.

Also, separately, he produced a loosely autobiographical TV show, DAVE. David Burd plays a fictionalized version of himself in the show, as does GaTa (who is Burd’s real life friend and hype man, and himself a rapper).

He’s now actually releasing an album called Penith, which is the name of the album that his character created in DAVE. The episode of the show that you’re referring to, that this song is about, is about a real event in Burd’s life, and he wrote Harrison Ave about it, and then wrote the episode about it/the song.
