This is a two part episode of a Podcast called Search Engine, that answers questions about a super exclusive techno club in Germany, and goes into the history of techno and what it means to the people of Berlin in particular. Linked is the corresponding newsletter for the podcast.

This is one of them. The other one (Alex Goldmund) is doing a podcast called Western Kabuki with two other people I don’t know. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/western-kabuki/id1647062210...

Someday maybe I’ll come to understand whether that Reply-All implosion was actually warranted or not. At the time I listened to and read every bit of exposition and explanation and apology I came across and just gave up a little confused and bummed out.

"Alright" in a "is he healthy" sense, or "alright" in a "is it ok for me to listen to him" sense? For the former, seems like he's doing well now. For the latter, it's up to you, in the end.

        Bad wording on my part.

He had a twitter apology, dipped from the public eye for a while, then came back. Whether or not that is sufficient is up to you. Personally I didn’t particularly care even when the allegations were brought up. It’s not like he was accused of sexual assault.

He was supposedly anti-union and a bully to his underlyings. I’d take note if I were to ever work under him, but as an audience member it’s pretty whatever, especially when it’s only one side of the story.

Sure, I'll form my own opinion. Thanks for the context.

I'll occasionally listen to content from folks more conservative than PJ Vogt. The anti-union stuff sucks, but it's a pretty common sentiment across the political spectrum at the moment.

I think the backlash when it was revealed was exacerbated by the fact that Reply All was putting out a big expose on what happened with Bon Appetit, in which one of the criticisms of the leadership there iirc was union-busting and poor treatment of employees. This made Vogt come off as super hypocritical in addition to any other criticisms of his behavior.

Joking aside, lots of people don't get into Berghain, so I'm not really sure why it's noteworthy that these two random Americans didn't get in. Berlin has no shortage of other clubs that are easier to get in and may well be just as good on the inside. It was funny when Elon Musk didn't get in though.

the 2nd part got released y'day. The first one (linked above) was fun, but the 2nd one felt like he was pretending to be interested in the Berlin Techno history just to get access to Berghain, to one-up his friends. To me he came across as really dishonest to all the people who gave interviews and helped him.

All other episodes of Search Engine are great, but this one leaves a bad taste.

Really? I had the opposite reaction. I felt the first episode was realllly stretching the amount of interest you can have in "why did two urbanites from america not get into a nightclub", while the second episode was a much more interesting dive into the German techno scene, as well as some introspection from the hosts.

Why do you think he was motivated by trying to get into Berghain, and not, if nothing else, getting content for his job? I didn't get that vibe at all. I mean, the most important thing is whether or not he has content for the episode - NYC rent ain't cheap, and whether or not he got into Berghain wasn't even in the episode.

at the start of ep 2 he quoted himself, saying there are 2 ways to get in there: a) the queue b) friends in the scene. And then he said "ok, let's try b), I have a little less than a week". And that's the episode. Sure, he got a nice week out of it, and an episode to publish, and might even have learned things / grown, but the initial goal was to get in.

I mean that’s a classic content angle. You pick a wacky goal as an “reason” for your reporting narrative.

Fair enough, still doesn't sounds right to me, but happy it was an interesting episode for others.
