~music Listening Club 18 - Venture EP
Hi, I'm filling in again!
Welcome to week 18! Here we've got this week's user-voted record: Venture EP by Televisor!
Taken from @Bauke's pitch:
Televisor's Venture EP is a high-energy 4 track nu-disco EP filled with synthesizers, heavy hitting basslines, and guitar licks all to make your head bounce. Together with some retro influences to make one hell of a funky beat in every track!
Here's the place to discuss your thoughts on the record, your history with it or the artist, and basically talk about whatever you want to that goes along with Venture EP. Remember that this is intended to be a slow moving thing, feel free to take your time and comment at any point in the week!
If you'd like to stream or buy the album, it can be found on most platforms here.
So to anyone who this stands out to: What makes this different or better than any other nu-disco? My experience in the genre is pretty limited to where it overlaps with future funk and a couple other exceptions, so maybe my ear just isn't tuned to listen to this correctly.
Not that this is awful or anything, it's just completely unremarkable to me.
Finally got a chance to listen to this today. I had no idea what nu-disco was going in to this, but after listening to the album, I like it. This may be sacrilegious but it reminded me of Daft Punk (in a good way). My only criticism would be the vocals in 3 of the tracks, which were kind of "meh" and didn't really do anything for me. They didn't make me dislike the tracks, but they didn't add anything to them either IMO. I think I would have preferred purely instrumental versions. Deluxe was my favorite on the album for that exact reason.
p.s. I also listened to a bunch more of their songs after finishing the album, and Starlight and Neon were both especially awesome... and both have no vocals either (other than heavily distorted vocal samples) which probably isn't a coincidence ;)
I think I'm in agreement with your assessment of the vocals, they varied from mediocre to kind of irritating to me throughout most of the tracks. There were some moments on this that were kind of cool instrumentally but I can't really say much else about it besides that.
Wow, I’m surprised to see Televisor on here! I remember when this EP released a few years ago, brings back a lot of memories of some older Monstercat tracks, and even now I can still perfectly remember Find That Someone and Break Loose.
My favourite Televisor song would have to be Dangerous - I don't listen to this style of music that often, but I love how upbeat the song is, and the lyrics make it super catchy!
