Offbeat Fridays – The thread where offbeat headlines become front page news

Tildes is a very serious site, where we discuss very serious matters like tax.wealth, microcode and mr beast. Tags culled from the highest voted topics from the last seven days, if anyone was observant.

But one of my favourite tags happens to be offbeat! Taking its original inspiration from Sir Nils Olav III, this thread is looking for any far-fetched offbeat stories lurking in the newspapers. It may not deserve its own post, but it deserves a wider audience!

Yikes! That could have Donnie Darko'd someone. Under what circumstances would it have been okay for (I'm assuming) military vehicles to do something like this which could conceivably have killed a civilian? If they didn't they might lose a hundred million dollar jet? Is that even then a reasonable trade off? Or would it only make sense if the risk is while dang thing crashing and risk killing even more people?

Wax museum removes Sinéad O'Connor figure

The National Wax Museum in Dublin is "committed" to creating a new wax figure of Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor after significant public backlash.

Among those who criticised the original figure was O'Connor's brother, John.

"It looked nothing like her and I thought it was hideous," he told Irish broadcaster RTÉ's Liveline radio programme on Friday. He added that the figure looked "between a mannequin and something out of the Thunderbirds".

Sinead always downplayed her looks, but she was a beautiful woman with an unforgettable voice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-EF60neguk&ab_channel=SineadOConnorVEVO

Folks who don't have face blindness: how bad is the wax figure?

I can tell it's a wax figure: the eyes and the skin, the weird smoothness and lack of human pores etc. and the figure doesn't have the fierce expression from either of photos of the person. But surely that's just wax being wax? Is it honestly that much worse than this random one I googled??

The face shape is wrong and overall it makes her look like a child IMO. But I'm not familiar with Sinead and don't know if it looks more like a younger version of her.

Why is Japan cracking down on rideable motorised suitcases?

Why is Japan cracking down on rideable motorised suitcases?

Rideable motorised suitcases, which emerged almost 10 years ago as something futuristically novel as well as functional, have increasingly become popular among travellers.

But the rideable suitcase craze is getting pushback in some Japanese airports because of safety concerns and due to some foreign visitors using them illegally on public roads.
