Offbeat Fridays – The thread where offbeat headlines become front page news

Tildes is a very serious site, where we discuss very serious matters like trafficking.sex, pyrex and shitposts. Tags culled from the highest voted topics from the last seven days, if anyone was observant.

But one of my favourite tags happens to be offbeat! Taking its original inspiration from Sir Nils Olav III, this thread is looking for any far-fetched offbeat stories lurking in the newspapers. It may not deserve its own post, but it deserves a wider audience!

Ruiz & Gavi's reward for win... 150kg of tomatoes

Winning the World Cup brings many rewards for players... but receiving your own body weight in tomatoes is surely one of the more unusual.

That is what Spain midfielders Fabian Ruiz and Gavi were presented with when they returned to their hometown after being part of the Spain squad that triumphed in North America.

The pair come from Los Palacios y Villafranca - a town to the south of Seville that has a population lower than 40,000 - and returned there on Wednesday for an official reception at the town hall.

I read this item, I didn't know what to make of it. I am assuming it's some local thing. Isn't Spain a place where they have this huge tomato fight? Ideas.

The spelling of some words changed to look better when written in gothic scripts Based on the image, I can see how that would be a problem.

The French will change how they pronounce a word to avoid it "sounding bad". Good thing language is fluid.
