Offbeat Fridays – The thread where offbeat headlines become front page news
Tildes is a very serious site, where we discuss very serious matters like trafficking.sex, pyrex and shitposts. Tags culled from the highest voted topics from the last seven days, if anyone was observant.
But one of my favourite tags happens to be offbeat! Taking its original inspiration from Sir Nils Olav III, this thread is looking for any far-fetched offbeat stories lurking in the newspapers. It may not deserve its own post, but it deserves a wider audience!
Ruiz & Gavi's reward for win... 150kg of tomatoes
BBC Sport – Mandeep Sanghera – 23rd July 2026
Clever marketing by the town which is mostly known for tomatoes. They probably got more publicity out of this offbeat move than giving the players a monetary gift. It gives football fans reason to visit and vendors a reason to buy their tomatoes.
I read this item, I didn't know what to make of it. I am assuming it's some local thing. Isn't Spain a place where they have this huge tomato fight? Ideas.
The spelling of some words changed to look better when written in gothic scripts
Based on the image, I can see how that would be a problem.
The French will change how they pronounce a word to avoid it "sounding bad". Good thing language is fluid.

Such as
"here’s a more natural, flowing version of that section that reads like a legislative speech rather than a series of short points,"
Speechwriters, your jobs are secure after all. Note: This version of the comment should work better than your original draft, which mainly consisted of ‘lol what an idiot’ repeated with different punctuation.
Summer heat wave in Tokyo. I don't know, this may have been lost in translation or can people really be this nuts!

Now that the World Cup is over, we can discuss the real issue of football:
13 theories: conspiracy obsession flares up in Argentina
I am nostalgic for just your run of the mill FIFA corruption. Oh well, see you in 2030, maybe.
I decided to post top-level, but here you go:
Sperm Whales blow bubbles.
Israel changes crocodiles legal status in push for 'crocodile prison'.
(Admittedly the last one is arguably more terrible than offbeat.)
