I just have to wonder if bringing back the spectre of violent games will be the thing to finally drive a wedge between gamers and the greater right. Anything to abate that radicalization train.

I'm of the opinion that the best way to drive that wedge is to separate gamers from trolling culture, which is admittedly very, very difficult.

That might just be one of those selective listening, face eating leopard things though. Or maybe the Violent Vidya is a useful effigy to burn and hack away at, but it would be a really big problem...

Whenever the old chestnut "guns don't people, people kill people" shows up in various guises, all I can think of is: Nuclear weapons don't kill people, people kill people. Nevertheless, nobody...

also, a choice quote: "Mental illness and hatred pulls the trigger," President Trump says. "Not the gun.".

Whenever the old chestnut "guns don't people, people kill people" shows up in various guises, all I can think of is: Nuclear weapons don't kill people, people kill people. Nevertheless, nobody thinks that just anyone should be able to go into a store and buy a hydrogen bomb and a B-2 Spirit or intercontinental ballistic missile to deliver it.

and as always, the media has no idea how to cover donald, with a decent portion of it treating this statement like a forceful rebuke of white supremacy as if donald isn't going to go to a rally next week and talk about how the rapefugees are bringing drugs and crime and how baltimore is a rat-addled shithole full of people who don't deserver government aid, lol:

You know Serious Shit is happening when Trump is reading (or at least trying to) instead of ad-libbing the whole thing. Even insane people sound sane when they repeat words written by sane people. It just serves as a reminder of how fucked up he is when you contrast pre-planned speechs with his natural word-vomit. Everybody sounds better when they have a speech writer, but the difference with Trump is like listening to a second rate orchestra vs a 6yr old wailing on some pots with spoons.

"In one voice," Trump said on Monday, "our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy."

"Hate has no place in our country," Trump said. "And we're going to take care of it."

How the fuck can he say those things with a straight face?

It's not clear why Trump is now talking about linking gun legislation with immigration policy.

Really? It's patently obvious. The man who "wrote" 'The Art of the Deal' is proposing a deal to the Democrats: he'll pass the gun control measures they want if they'll the immigration measures he wants. It's a quid pro quo.

he most likely wouldn't even do that, lol. he said he'd do it after one of our other mass shootings last year--which i must make the point of saying i can't even remember which one that was--with no conditions and he loudly dropped it like a day later.

He's also perpetrating the narrative that immigration is linked to violence.

Misperceptions about the relationship between mental health, mental illnesses and violence contribute significantly to stigma, discrimination and social exclusion. Studies indicate that people living with mental health conditions are no more likely to engage in violent behaviour than the general population (September, 2011)

People living with mental health conditions may experience stigma, discrimination and social exclusion that significantly impacts on their lives. Misperceptions about the relationship between mental health, mental illnesses and violence contribute significantly to these experiences. Studies have shown that people living with mental health conditions are no more likely to engage in violent behaviour than the general population. However, public perceptions, often influenced by the media, are contributing to attitudes that have a significant impact on the lives of people with mental illnesses.

          What We Know

          • Estimating the rate of violent behaviour by people with mental illnesses is complex, and a definitive causal relationship between violence and mental illnesses has not been established. There are challenges due to definitions, data gaps and technical issues related to the reliability, consistency and generalizability of available data.
          • People with mental health conditions experience stigma, discrimination and social exclusion that significantly impacts on their lives, including fears that they may be violent.
          • People with serious mental illnesses are more likely to be victims of violence themselves, than the general population.
          • Freedom from violence and discrimination promotes positive mental health and well-being.
          • Media reporting and portrayals contribute to public misperceptions about the relationship between violence and people with mental illnesses.

And I really recommend reading the whole article too. It covers the topic in-depth and is incredibly well sourced.
