This makes me wonder... if we took pro-Trump (i.e., cities/municipalities where Trump holds a > 50% approval rating) and anti-Trump cities and compared their economies, how would that look? I know...
The designation comes after a memo from President Trump earlier this month threatening to cut off federal funds for cities
This makes me wonder... if we took pro-Trump (i.e., cities/municipalities where Trump holds a > 50% approval rating) and anti-Trump cities and compared their economies, how would that look? I know pro-Trump and anti-Trump economies are conflated, so it's not that simple to breakdown, but still, the economy of New York City is pretty massive...
Also, if the city is an "anarchist jurisdiction" can they tell the federal government "okay, we're withholding state funding to you" and refuse to pay taxes?
It's almost as if you're exposed to a bunch of different non-white people by living in a large city with lots of them, you realize that they aren't any different from you. Weird...

Coincidentally, I once worked with a guy that was very, very, conservative and didn't like Mexicans. His favorite place to go for lunch was a taco stand right down the street from the office... I...

Isn't this mostly by virtue of population though? While that doesn't discredit urban relevance (see every corporation's headquarters) or the politicization of federal aid (at least at the state level), that doesn't mean cities are the relevant places while rural areas are just dead, useless weight hobbling us per capita, right?

Hello from midtown Manhattan in NYC, where I would like to inform you that this anarchist characterization of our city is complete and utter bullshit. We have the same problems every other city has in the COVID era, but there is no crime wave, anarchists are not destroying the city, and everything is actually pretty much OK. Quieter than usual in midtown for sure (few commuters and no tourists), but other neighborhoods are crackling with positive energy and the implementation of outdoor dining has been kind of lovely. There is live music and art springing up everywhere it can, like weeds growing in cracks in the pavement. New York City is fine, and Trump and Barr are full of shit (as usual).

NYC checking in as well, there's nothing "anarchist" about the city right now. Even the Occupy City Hall protest was mostly bored high school students, hippy idealogues, and the opportunistic homeless. The area they occupied was incredibly tiny, and it looked more like after-hours at a music festival than some organized political movement (I visited in person so this is not just hearsay).
What's insulting about this classification of the city, is that that protest was ended by the city itself months ago, and only now is being cited as the reason to hold federal funding as a political tactic leading up to the election. This is ostentatiously a targeted attack in order to maintain the right-wing narrative that liberal cities are descending into chaos, but I can't say I'm surprised Trump and his cronies keep managing to discover new lows they are unafraid to stoop to.

I don't believe he saw the irony there...
LA doesn't want to be Singapore. Yet. If Trumpies get their way, it may be a different story.

Somebody tell the mayor, city council, police, and borough presidents that!
Seriously, how can that claim be made about a functioning city.
Eminent domain his properties in the city.
My favorite thing about this is seeing all the Chicago residents complaining on Twitter about how they weren't included in the list.
