This is really interesting! This researcher found that one’s physical position affects how we see things; some optical illusions no longer work, for example, when viewed lying on your side. Things look further away, wider spaced, or otherwise different when viewed upside down from between your legs (hence “between legs effect”).

The Ignobel Prize is usually given to a piece of research which finds something humorous, but it’s also usually a solidly interesting study too. In this case the relationship between body and brain is quite fascinating.

What I'd be very interested in is if the effect is different when doing a handstand. That way you could try to narrow down what exactly causes the effect: just the head being upside down or the head being flipped while still standing on solid ground, meaning the perception of gravity is different along the bodies vertical axis and even flips around the middle.

I tried looking through some of the citations of his work here https://www.researchgate.net/publication/6813955_Perceived_size_and_perceived_distance_of_targets_viewed_from_between_the_legs_Evidence_for_proprioceptive_theory but there are too many and I don’t know the correct terminology. A few seem to be using his work for VR headset tech which is a pretty cool use

I've heard the Ignobel Prize described as rewarding research "that makes you laugh, then makes you think"
