Since they stopped making my favourite pen of all time (Uni powertank smart series), I decided to treat myself to a big i slim click pen, which is supposed to be extremely flexible with different refills. It does work with the powertank refills with just a bit of modification, which is nice. But I find that the actual mechanism in the pen is fiddly and often jams, which is quite disappointing for a $200 pen.

I'm actually surprised the overwhelming opinion here is so much in favour of this change. I'm a big daylight savings fan personally, but I understand the arguments against it. But I thought it was pretty widely accepted that permanent daylight saving time was the worst of the three options?

I'm really interested to see how this works out for BC people over the next few years.

I read The Hyperion Cantos last year immediately after finishing The Expanse. It's a good series (well the first two at least, I enjoyed the second two but can see why they are more divisive) but honestly apart from the fact that they both feature space travel, they couldn't be more different.

Hyperion is very much of the old fashioned scifi style where there are many other planets that are pretty much slightly different earths. The technology is ultra futuristic (science magic style) as opposed to the very grounded tech in The Expanse.

In hindsight I wish I'd read something else in between as a kind of palette cleanser so I didn't contrast them so much in my mind, I think that would have helped me sink into Hyperion more quickly and easily.

I watched it after Edge Of Tomorrow which was great and which I've rewatched multiple times, but I have no desire whatsoever to research Oblivion.

Unfortunately, reading books for entertainment is ridiculous. You do not live in a log cabin on the prairie. You have Netflix, you have video games, you have TikTok, you have Twitter (you really spend too much time on Twitter anon). No one reads books for entertainment anymore, because paper is an inferior entertainment platform. The only people who still read books for entertainment are women who prefer their porn to have DIY visuals.

This guy truly can't comprehend that anyone would read for pleasure except smut? Really?

And he actually thinks that no one today is having any sort of unique or interesting experiences that people might want to learn about? The only way to get a new perspective is to read books hundreds of years old?

I don't know if this article was supposed to be rage bait, but it's certainly irritating.

I've been using the Ian knot exclusively for around 15 years now. I hold the laces with my pinkie and ring fingers while thing with my index and pointer fingers, which lets you hold tension while tying. The whole thing takes literally like 2 seconds for a tight, secure knot. It's amazing and people are blown away when they see it.

I am not so sure that enough pedophiles can follow some combination of self control and fear of legal or social retribution.
There seems to be too much pedophilia acted out in the world.

Your remark about Dr. Seuss' gibberish words exactly sums up my biggest concern with this learning system, which is that it doesn't give any method for reading words that the reader doesn't already know. How is someone who learnt to read like this supposed to read any proper nouns? Can they read someone's name and pronounce it?

Surmising the word from context sounds like a sort of word game rather than actually reading.

I guess I'm not convinced that there are significant, widespread negative health impacts from having to get up an hour earlier according to the sun.

What about everyone that is able to sleep an hour longer in the morning because the sun isn't coming up at 4 in the morning, and they aren't bring woken up by the light and noise as the day starts?

The claim that deaths increase significantly around the traditions is a myth. You can see the results here that mortality increases slightly the week after spring transition, but it is also higher in the week before transition. There is a decent increase in mortality the Sunday after the autumn transition (~4%), but this day is actually an hour longer (also ~4%) so the rate is the same.

The effects of losing an hour of sleep are much much greater than those of the actual different time, and the gain of an hour at the end of summer actually had a beneficial effect.

How many people are waking up before dawn regularly in summer? And not just before sunrise, but early enough that their health is impacted. I definitely don't think it's a large group of people and definitely not "all people."

Obviously it makes more sense in some places than others (more important the farther you are from the equator) but in general I think daylight savings is great.
