- Woman Loses Prized NASA Internship Over Vulgar Tweet - But She Might Get a Better Position

This is pretty hilarious to me. I wonder when people are going to start realizing that what is put on social media doesn’t only stay in your little bubble.
Edit: oops, there’s a typo
Emphasis mine.
I don't think this is the way to go about it. No only will there be no record, but she'll have an even better position than before the wildly unprofessional response tweet. There is effectively no real consequences, and even a benefit in both position (potentially) and connections (with someone on the NSC) for behavior that we should be discouraging. I certainly don't think it should haunt her forever like the trend on social media seems to be, but she should have to accept that she lost the internship, find other work for now, learn from her mistakes, and try again next time a position opens if her dream is to work at NASA.
I think young people make mistakes and the audience on twitter is accustomed to crass language. Did she deserve a reprimand? Sure. Did she deserve an 86ing from an internship she's obviously over the moon about? Probably not.
She's an intern. This was and hopefully still is a teachable moment.
It was her personal social media account - a semi-pseudoanonymous one at that - and the guy made a comment that could easily be taken as condescension if you didn't know his history.
I dislike furries as much as the next internet rando but c'mon it's not like she insulted someone who was verified on her professional account.
When adding "I'm working at [organization]", the defense of personal account no longer applies. You have now associated your personal views and statement with the organization.
I don't know what any of this has to do with being a furry or not.
I've really changed my perspective on furries. It's not my jam by any stretch of the imagination but on the whole, they're an overwhelmingly positive and welcoming group.
It depends on which part of the group they're in, but honestly my perspective's always been just 'live and let live but pls don't force me to partake 2 ty.'
Oh boy, that actually ended a lot better than expected! This story sure was a hell of a roller coaster. The way it was written had me rolling too.
It didn't end there. The furry brigade went after Hickam until he deleted his twitter account. Example.
I thinking ending her internship is a bit much. Was it an inappropriate tweet, yeah, but in the grand scheme of things, it was harmless.
It sounds like it's turning out better than I expected, so hopefully things still work out for her.
Edit: "team" > "grand" (I don't even know how...)
Yeah it turns out okay I'm glad she's got some support from the guy
check yo self fool
I don't think it was appropriate of Homer Hickam to jump into conversation with her.
He probably thought she'd be thrilled he said anything at all given what a big name he is.
That's what I don't get, she didn't tag NASA, it was a tweet to the ether of Twitter. Their paths should not have crossed
He probably checks #NASA because of his position. Twitter is full of people claiming various things about NASA, from supposed hidden flat earth symbology to faked Mars lander images.
so a tumbling of unintended consequences
Did you read the OP?
It seems like a technology fail on all sides.
But twitter is practically designed for public communication fails and rapid signal boosting of things that don't matter and shouldn't be public.
Welcome to the internet. Everything you say will be held against you.
This turned far more wholesome than the title suggested it would.
Good on these guys for being proper human beings!
