For those not reading the article right now Smith is black and a coach but I can't tell if this is "I don't want to have the slightest inkling that I didn't fully earn this job," or if it's "well, I used the ladder and don't need it anymore," but I can understand the former attitude.
No one "wants" to be a diversity hire and even if he's not asking him about it implies to him that you think he is. Kind of a catch 22 there but still was funny they threw a wet blanket on the end of their article.
