I met up with my brother and his friends at a bar last night to watch the Commanders game. It was nice getting out and cheering/groaning with a group of other fans for a change. The ending of the Commanders/Bears game was very disappointing though :| Also the Dolphins continue to be the Dolphins.
It's still neat to watch Caleb Williams grow though. It's nice to see the Bears have a QB who is actually promising for the first time in ever.
It's not just that, they found a coach that isn't going to completely screw it up and ruin Caleb for them long run. The list of Bears QBs that just crashed and burned because of coaching ineptitude is only beaten by the Browns.
Usually by this point in the season you have a pretty good sense for how good or bad your team is, but I still don't know if the Broncos are any good. They're the ultimate "yeah, but..." team. The defense played great, but it was against the Jets. Supposedly Sean Payton loves his QB, but he's still at about a 3:1 ratio of bad plays to good plays. I've lost count of the number of times Nix has missed an open man by about 6in, but it feels like he'd be in the MVP discussion right now if he hit those. Denver is a few plays away from being undefeated, but the only convincing win was against the Burrowless Bengals and even that could have been better. Come January this team could be fighting for the number one seed or be on an 8-game losing streak and neither would surprise me.
I saw a fan theory that Payton just doesn't want to put out any of the potentially good plays on tape when they're playing against a bad team. Which given Payton's history, kinda makes sense. It's just so stressful
On the contrary, I think this is the exact point of the season when all the narratives start to turn on their heads. Bad teams beat good ones, elite teams lose in weird ways, snorefests randomly become shoot-outs, etc. I wouldn't be too worried about your team. I think it was about this time last year when Nix seemingly put it all together overnight and the Broncos were suddenly firing on all cylinders.
Your resident Carolina fan again with the weekly update:
We... won? I had no delusion or homer-ism that we would win. I just wanted it to be competitive so I could say we tried and didn't look like complete ass and maybe start to shake the image that we are a team that you can beat because we are an easy team and the "get right" game for more popular big market teams.
..And then they went out and gave a solid, commanding performance. The offense was the star of the show, with Rico putting in another impressive performance on the ground, setting a franchise record for all-purpose yards. Bryce was a solid game manager, with his only INT being on the fault of TMac not holding on to the pass. TMac also finally found the endzone and got there twice!
This offense has finally found its identity as a possession first team, utilizing a solid run game and a deadly pass when the defense has to commit to trying to stop the run. It's a perfect combination for a grinding out a game to shut down high powered offenses and is downright destructive to bad ones. The weirdest part is that I was feeling confident we would just walk down the field and score some amount of points. It was a weird feeling.
The defense is vastly improved from last year's worst in the league unit, and thats largely because of Derrick Brown being back. Big DB has slowly grown more back to form every week and is now back to how good he was before he was injured. Every week has a highlight reel of him throwing grown men like rag dolls and making crazy athletic plays. Running on our team has effectively become impossible up the middle purely because of him. This is forcing teams to pass on us, which is more risky by nature and feeds back into our grindy offense in a feedback loop that is not great for the other team.
Looking ahead, we have an interesting challenge: the Jets are 0-6, but also everyone expects we will fuck up and give them their first win. Honestly, I've been tortured by this team enough to not be surprised if it happens. Realistically? If we play like we have been the last two weeks, we should comfortably win. The issue is that the Jets defense is actually decent, and we will have to rely on Fields to struggle and keep giving us chances while throwing away theirs.
I don't like this feeling of being generally favored for the first time in ages, even if it is slight. I haven't felt it in a long time and it makes me anxious... but I hope it happens often enough to get used to it again. 2015 was a decade ago, and feels like a dream.
My team won! Although somehow the feeling is diminished by the fact that apparently losing to the Raiders is a fireable offense for the head coach.
Patriots leading the AFC East. Just laying that statement down. I took a cursory look over the league and only two or so teams even have a better record than the Pats.
Im not saying we're going anywhere but maybe we'll win a playoff game!
A few years ago this would've been a given and it would've pissed me off (as a Dolphins fan). But now? I'd rather the Pats take the AFC East over the Bills any day. Very strange times we live in :P
