Hows Tildes feel about this... if at all?
Sadly ~sports is one of the least active groups on the site so far that I have seen, so you may not get much response. Other than MMA, I don't follow sports at all, so am part of the problem too... but hopefully as the userbase increases more sports buffs become active on the site.
yea figured id toss some content out there
This is noise, but someone else exists on Tildes who follows MMA?
Less so these days since I just don't have the time (or $$$ for PPV) to watch every single event like I used to, but I do indeed follow MMA... and have since the early Pride days and back before UFC even had weight classes. Bas Rutten is probably my all time favorite fighter/personality but George St-Pierre (a fellow Canadian) is a close second. What about yourself?
I've been a fight fan all my life. My father got me into it with boxing and Tyson back in the '80s. When I moved out, I had the good fortune to find an upstairs neighbor who loved boxing, so we'd watch Friday Night Fights every week (much to the dismay of our spouses). When MMA first began, we would order the PPV events with a few other guys to soften the cost. I remember "cage fighting" that had very little rules. It was a wild frontier. Now, I'm glad it's a lot more controlled and actually think it's safer than boxing in terms of CTE. It's a bloodsport no doubt, but I can't help but enjoy it.
In terms of fighters, I always liked Machida's style. Nurmagamedov is probably the guy I've enjoyed the most in more recent years, but he's got issues outside the octagon. The shame now is that once they win a major fight (his was the McGregor KO), they want to "fight Mayweather" or do something else for a quick $100M. They have no interest in defending their belts after that, much like Connor now. Dana White has fostered this atmosphere, and it's terrible for the sport.
I was never really into boxing as I find the ruleset way too physically limiting, which makes for a less dynamic (i.e. boring) fight. I also come from a Karate and Judo background, so Machida is up there in the ranks for me too as is Stephen Thompson and Karo Parisyan for the same reasons. And yeah, Khabib is super fun to watch but I really dislike his overall attitude and behavior (in and outside the ring, as you mentioned). Fedor > Khabib as far as Sambo fighters go, in my eyes.
Totally 100% agree about everything else too BTW, from the CTE issue thankfully being less of an issue in MMA, sort of feeling weird/guilty about enjoying bloodsports, really disliking the gimmicky (and greedy) trend of the champions crossing over to other fighting sports and it being incredibly detrimental to MMA; Sure it has generated insane publicity, which has brought in a ton of new fans into the scene... but it's all just so manufactured, over-hyped and silly.
And it takes away the most exciting fighters in the sport. In the past, we would have seen a guy like Nurmagamodov defending his belt a bunch of times, and quickly; now it's that one fight (McGregor) and he doesn't fight for a year. It's removing the raw talent from the active fighter list, and that's a real shame because guys with talent like that are pretty damn rare.
Why is it a problem?
Why is a section of the site not having enough users interested in the subject to properly sustain activity there a problem? I think that should be rather obvious. And even outside that more pragmatic, organizational aspect, sports are a major part of a huge portion of the general public's lives, and the fact that there is seemingly not that many sports fans here on Tildes proportional to what is found elsewhere ("real life" and other sites) indicates a bit of a fundamental gap in the userbase, IMO.
this tangent might be better for a ~tildes meta topic, but i think this is always going to be a problem with most tildes sections until tildes is public and takes on more than just redditors. just by the nature of how you have to get here and what tildes is founded on, most people who end up here are probably going to be disproportionately interested in technology, compsci, and video games and not so much with things like sports. we have a decent number of folks (including myself) who don't really fit that bill, but bauke's scraping would suggest that people like me are a minority and that this is a similar problem (topic-wise, anyways) in basically everything that's not tech, music, or meta--it's just really obvious in ~sports, where almost nothing is getting engagement beyond votes.
Well said, I agree. And I think even in the hypothetical future where Tildes survives/thrives and recruitment to the site isn't from so narrow a source as just reddit and Hacker News, there will always be a disproportionate amount of people more interested in the various "nerdy" pursuits than in traditional, physical sports. But I do think we should at least strive to attain a better balance in that area if we can, and I think enticing more sports fans to the site, whose sociopolitical and socioeconomic base as a group is rather broad to begin with, is potentially a good place to start. :)
If there is no activity, remove the group. Just because it exists as a topic outside of ~ shouldn't have any bearing on what exists here. If enough people want to discuss those topics, they appear in ~s like news and talk, and back it comes.
There is absolutely no need for ~ to be demographically equal to the whole internet. The whole internet sucks.
It's a low risk high reward pick up for the Browns, it's a good pick up for them. Doesn't exactly fill a need since they got two good backs but they add a play maker so it's not a bad thing for the team. Also interesting since the last time we had video evidence of a domestic abuse case was Ray Rice and that was a death knell for his career, looking like it won't be if you're talented enough.
It's worth noting that Kareem Hunt is not in trouble for domestic violence. He had no relationship with the woman. Also worth noting that he has not been arrested or charged with anything.
I honestly don't see it as a big deal. The team knows what they're getting into and he supposedly got help for his anger issues. Let's see if he'll change as person for the better or just get better at hiding his abusive behavior.
This is a strange signing. Talent-wise, Hunt is an incredible player. But with Chubbs and Mayfield, the Browns finally had some talented, home-grown players. Bringing Hunt of all people into the fold seems like a strange choice at best.
i agree - i think this was a "lets sign him because nobody else will right now - let the PR debacle settle down and see what fines/suspensions he gets" - at the very worst, at 1m/1yr its kind of a win win - trade value etc - from a GM's eyes, this was a good move.... pending his fines/suspensions
I trust John Dorsey to make these personnel decisions. I also trust Freddie Kitchens. They're not going to bring in some locker-room cancer and let him poison the well.
This article offers some perspective:
There's very little downside and very little risk until the league decides his fate.
It’s a low risk, high reward move for both the player and the team.
Hunt gets a chance to rehabilitate his image on a young, rising team.
Browns get a top 5 running back for pennies. If he performs well, they benefit from the production while having a strong trade piece. Mayfield gets a great RB to keep defenses honest.
It’s a win/win for all involved. Honestly, I had mildly hoped my Jaguars would take the flyer on him.
