Why are nobody talking about the Euros here?
This tournament has been absolutely bonkers so far with last night as the culmination so far. What an absolutely mad night that was. 14 goals and a penalty shoot out. The world champions are out after a heroic effort from the Swiss and Croatia putting up one helluva fight against Spain. I can't remember a EURO or WC so exiting before.
Edit: Just to clarify - this wasn't meant as a provocation or a dig at this sites lack of interest in sports. I'm just excited.
Nobody is talking about the Euros here because Tildes isn't really populated with people who care much about sports. And as someone who is into sports, I go elsewhere for sports discussion since there's none here.
Wasn't yesterday incredible though? I would say the 2018 WC was approximately this exciting (record number of games before a goalless draw), but no other WC/Euros from my lifetime comes close, even after accounting for my nostalgia. I had a hunch this tournament would be unusual when the Italians led us off and scored 3 in a Euros match for the first time in their history. That's not the Italy I grew up knowing my entire life!
Yeah I know it's not the most sports focused place but just yesterday people were really exited about dics golf? I'm just so tired about the memes and "witty" comments on /r/soccer and thought there must be some people interested in the Euros here.
I had no stakes in the teams playing yesterday but still screamed at my TV i disbelief and excitement. That's quality in my book.
You could be right about the 2018 WC but my team is still going strong now so that might be in play here :). Haha, Italy with 3 goals is just not real life and the fact that people are genuinely fearing the England-Germany game will take us back to boring is just so funny to me. Two of the biggest teams ever facing each other and all people are talking about are how the underdogs are creating memorable matches that these giants can't possibly live up too. But if the trend goes on this match is going to be crazy too. Fingers crossed. I just love how unpredictable everything is right now.
I would suggest that instead of "why aren't people talking about [x]" threads, it's better to just post a thread. ~sports is one of the least popular groups, with about 1 topic and 4 comments posted daily. If you want to see content about a topic, write the topic!
I like disc golf, which is why you probably saw the disc golf post yesterday, but it's there because I wrote it. So write something! Make some content happen here, that's what Tildes needs. If you want people to be interested, write something interesting. Give us some links to click on; share some highlights! Talk about a crazy game, or something you were especially interested in (which is what you've done! Kudos and thanks).
If you want to see discussion around each knockout match, post a thread! People who are interested will comment. The big difference between ~sports and r/soccer is about 2.7M people, so any discussion that you're interested in you may have to seed. And the discussion might not be big for this Euros, but if you seed it now by the next Euros it will be better!
Who's your team? I've generally followed France in European competition since I speak French and studied there a couple different times (including during the 2006 WC run), but I found myself cheering for Switzerland by the end! They were just so damn clinical in those key moments.
I will always be a firm believer in simply getting that first goal back to mount a comeback and shift the momentum. United v Bayern, Liverpool v Milan, Barca v PSG, Roma v Barca, United v PSG in CL or Switzerland v France yesterday. There are many great comebacks that show how the mental side of this game is so critical (especially in combination with fatigue). A 2-goal deficit is really nothing, and some teams (like Croatia) are truly at their best under pressure. It's amazing to watch.
My team is Denmark so I'm pretty happy with the results so far. Yeah, the way the match shifted after Switzerland missed their penalty that could have made it 2-0. In just a few minutes they went from a potential comfortable lead to trailing behind...and then France leaned back after securing the 1-3 lead only to be surprised by the Swiss comeback again in the end.
I was following Copa América earlier since I wanted the best for my team, but yesterday I decided to watch one match from the Euros. I watched France vs Switzerland and oh boy, that was a match. Europeans are lucky to have this level of football after so long, it makes me wish we could play like that.
I haven't commented here since... I didn't think there was room for a discussion about football. I mostly imagine this page as USA-primarily, so they don't have appetite for that, I guess.
I definitely think a majority of the users here are Americans, and a majority probably do not care for sports at all - a lot of the discussions here are about tech.
But the US is hosting most of the matches of the World Cup in 2026, so hopefully that will garner more interest in soccer. I do feel like it's beginning to catch on there, especially because of how well the women's national team is doing.
The host nation automatically qualifies so Mexico and USA will, under current rules, both be making an appearance. This is why Qatar will be playing in the competition for the first time when they host in 2022.
Getting out the group stages is another story though.
I've been tentatively following the Euros, despite having very little interest in football.
England vs Germany is going to be a huge match tonight. There will be legions of England fans chanting "Two world wars and one world cup", then watching as their squad get absolutely humiliated. Since England's 1966 World Cup win, our win record against Germany in international competition has been abysmal.
I honestly believe that the only thing coming home this year will be the England squad
from a Ro16 elimination.EDIT: I was wrong about my prediction for this match. 2-0 to England. We're going to the quarters to face either Sweden or Ukraine.
Yeah...and the rumors about fans getting banned for singing "10 German bombers" are probably the least of their worries when the final whistle blows. I don't know what I'm hoping for and I don't particularly like the Germans but the unstoppable hubris from the English is just so damn funny when it bites them in the ass again and again.
Man, yesterday was one in a million, I really don't think that two matches of the same quality can happen again for some time.
Yesterday was the most bonkers day I remember in recent football history, holy shit! Very excited that Switzerland pulled it off. I'm not European and don't really have any affiliation there, so this has been excellent as a neutral. :D
This is my main takeaway from this tournament so far. If your ever going to try getting into football this is it! National team football is a different breed of football with different emotions and strain of togetherness you don't find on a club level. It really gathers people and creates a lot more sympathy across teams and fans.
Indeed, I am not an expert of football but with the quality of the matches you don't need that to enjoy them. National team is that event that in my country really does unite people and so in others' countries.
I have to say the Europa League final this year where at the 22nd penalty of the shootout one goalkeeper misses after everyone else has scored was even more bonkers.
But both games yesterday were pretty spectacular!
Fair. That one just hurt, though.
I don't care much about football. That said I might go out with my camera on Friday, if the Swiss team wins again it's gonna be bonkers.
Sounds like an good plan. This could be a special moment that might not happen again.
Well I, for one, had no idea that "Euros" meant anything other than the currency until yesterday, so...
The first few times I saw this come up in internet conversation over the last day or so were extremely confusing.
Haha, fair enough. This wasn't meant as a provocation or a dig at this sites lack of interest in sports. I just wanted to know if anyone here is as exited as I am about this :)
