Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2024 - Results

Oscar Piastri is a beast. But so is Leclerc. I really thought Leclerc was going to get the place back a couple times, but Piastri kept closing that door on him. Absolutely great race for the both of them.

The crash between Perez and Sainz was unfortunate. Perez, especially, was driving a great race. He was ahead of Max! The whole time or pretty close to it, I think. P3/P4 for both would've been a great position for each. But DNFs for both instead.

I don't think it was 100% either driver's fault, as it sounds like both were trying to get into Leclerc's slipstream and drifted into each other, but I would probably assign more to Perez, just because he could see from behind and could've moved over. But I think it's really just a racing incident. They were racing hard; shit happens.

Great haul for Williams with 10pts! Even had Sainz and Checo not crashed out, they still would've scored points.

Anyway, onward to another street circuit: Singapore!

Also, yeah, looks like a racing incident but the right angle can swing me either way.

Stewards have ruled it a racing incident, with no fault assigned, and no penalties, which I think is the right call. Source: FIA [PDF]

Stewards have ruled it a racing incident, with no fault assigned, and no penalties, which I think is the right call.

The Stewards heard from the driver of Car 11 (Sergio Perez), the driver of Car 55
(Carlos Sainz), team representatives and reviewed positioning/marshalling system
data, video, and in-car video evidence.

Sainz and Perez made contact and crashed shortly after Turn 2 on lap 50. This is a
situation where a small touch had significant consequences. The Stewards reviewed
how the incident occurred, not the consequence.

Sainz passed Perez after turn 1 and was completely ahead at the apex of turn 2. With
a compromised exit by Sainz, Perez pulled to the inside of Sainz. Sainz reported that
he was aware of Perez to his inside. Perez, being slightly behind, was in a better
position to see the relative location of the cars. But as the two cars approached the
wall on the right at the exit of Turn 2, they were about 1m apart.

From this point and throughout the incident, neither driver steered erratically, and
indeed both kept their steering very neutral.

The Stewards checked the driving line of the drivers on pervious laps. Sainz was on
or close to his normal racing line, which forms a slight angle away from the right hand
wall. From the exit to the point of contact he move approximately one car width further
away from the wall. Perez moved approximately half a car width further away from the
same wall, being more parallel to the right hand wall.

It was thus apparent that while ahead, and having the right to drive his line, Sainz did
move slightly towards a car that he had limited vision of. At the same time, there was
nothing unusual about Perez’ line, but he could have done more to avoid the car that
      he had better view of.

In conclusion, the Stewards deem this to be a racing incident with neither driver being
predominantly at fault, and take no further action.

I look at the loss of points on both their teams' behalfs as more than enough penalty for that crash!

It's been fun seeing different people win more often, and for McLaren to be winning the constructor's championship instead of Red Bull or Mercedes. When I started watching it was just The Lewis Show™ then it suddenly became The Max Show™. This season it's been more interesting.

Mclaren really needs to manage this 'Oscar is amazing' situation and Oscar needs to make sure he doesn't pull a Danny and go off to a shitty constructor. I really want to see him succeed. He's young, so he's got time to be a strong #2 if thats what they want.

Yeah I wonder how long Piastri will play second fiddle of sorts. Sure this is only his second season and he's 4th in the WDC, but he's only 32pts behind his teammate in 2nd, who's been in F1 since 2019. There exists the possibility of him getting ahead of Norris still. What happens if he gets real close, like single digits difference? What do "Papaya Rules" say about that?

Like I'm not trying to dog on Norris. I think Norris is a great driver. Certainly deserves to mix it up at the top. I've always thought that (which is McLaren is my second team). But I'm starting to think he's not at the same level. Is Piastri at that level? Maybe not, but maybe just not yet. It's hard not to think that he could be a Max- or Lewis-level "generational talent." Really excited that we may get a chance to see this play out.

I really want to see Lando win a title this or next year. I think his window for winning is fairly small -- especially with Oscar, these other young guys, Aston Martin, and more.

I wish they'd keep everything as is instead of 2026. I never thought we'd see Williams in the mix again. I know its only a week, but still... its exciting.

For Piastri, I think Webber is good for him when it comes to being a supportive driver without being a support driver for Lando. Someone said the other day that the official line on 'Papaya Rules' was 'don't crash'. I wouldn't be surprised if Zak is totally cool with them fighting so long as they bring home the constructors and don't crash. Lando said that he wants to win on his own and not by swaps, so that's great for everybody if he sincerely believes that.

All in all, I'm totally with you wrt Piastri being a generational talent. He doesn't have the spree of podiums like Hamilton's start, but he also came in during a period of absolute dominance.
