Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix 2024 - Results
And that's a wrap on the WDC! Congrats to Max on his 4th Drivers Championship in a row!
So I need to rewatch the race. The race was at 1am my time, which isn't super late for me...but I fell asleep between laps 16-45. Oops.
Anyway, we are back in another triple-header -- anyone else think the schedule sucks this year? Only two more races left. Next weekend in Qatar, and then the season finale the following weekend in Abu Dhabi. The WCC is still in play, so hopefully we'll get an exciting end of the season.
Next race:
Qatar Grand Prix
Lusail International Circuit
Sunday, December 1

Fastest Lap: Lando Norris

I like George and feel for him. He’s got that ‘Bad Luck Brian’ thing where he runs a perfect race, barely gets on tv, his teammate gets driver of the day, etc.
Fun race, though. The pool I run has another week where we were all horribly wrong.
The whole thing with the cats is awkward and they need to ditch that or make it way smoother.
Took me a solid twenty seconds to sound out that your "cats" was a typo for "cars" - the silly thing before the podium. Don't change it. The cats thing is a fun typo. 😀
hahaha sorry. I'm leaving it. I'd rather they just put them in a room with a bunch of cats instead of that stupid car thing.
Congrats to Max, another well earned championship after a season of wonderful drives after no longer being in the fastest car. It’s almost unbelievable how much McLaren bottled it in the last handful of races when it looked like Lando might have a real chance.
The race itself was pretty good, lots of overtakes and a good mix of strategy, but I’m pretty burned out on F1 at this point of the year. There are just so many races that they start to individually lose importance. Overall, it’s been a good year for F1, though, and it’s good to have four teams being competitive right now and next year will probably be insane, I just wish the season had fewer races and, while I liked sprint races when they started, I’m kind of sick of those too.
As for my thoughts on Vegas: I think the track is okay, but I’m pretty appalled at the greed of FOM (no, this isn’t a surprise) with them having hotel windows blacked out and doing anything they can to prevent outside viewership even though outside viewership might grow the sport and the measures they take probably cost them more money than they would “lose” if some people can watch who didn’t pay. It’s just dumb.
When the previous triple-header started, I was already at that point. I think it wouldn't be so bad if there weren't multiple three week breaks in the schedule. Have the summer break be the long break; make it four weeks. I'm not sure if I really want fewer races, but maybe better spaced?
I really couldn't make myself excited about the Las Vegas GP. Late in the calendar, the championship more-or-less a fait-accompli, and zero history and luster.
If you want Las Vegas to be an important race, I think it needs to be earlier in the calendar of races. The whole gamble-schtick doesn't land when you're talking about the tail end of the race calendar.
F1TV also wouldn't work for me at all on three browsers late night, live, so I ended up watching it on replay without spoilers this morning. I didn't need to care about this race.
Semi- looking forward to the final races now that the driver's championship has been decided. Usually a fun period of the year.
I wasn't excited last year but then it ended up being one of the best races of the season. This year, I tried to stay up late, but I just got too tired around lap 25, especially considering this year's already had plenty of great races.
Usually lap 20-40 is nap time in any race :P
It's kind of a weird season where the championship is pretty close but a lot of the races have a car that boringly sits in front for the entire race. But you can't before the weekend which of Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, or Mercedes will have the dominant car.
Congrats to Max on #4, a well deserved championship. I didn't follow this season too closely, especially after the domination last year. It seems like Red Bull lost a bit of their edge this year and there was a proper 3-way fight between Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull with Mercedes sometimes getting close in 4th. Perez feels a bit more lost this year, especially after the Miami race. While Max was winning races and getting on the podium, Perez was in the bottom of the points and on occasion, not scoring any at all. I think Red Bull would've been closer had Perez had good form.
In 2022, Perez had about 67% of the points Max had. Right now he has just 37% of Max’s points. If he were at that 67% ratio still, that would be 118 more points for Red Bull this year and they’d be thus dominating the constructor’s championship. To just be leading right now, Checo would only need to have scored 51% of Max’s points. He’s been a disaster and I don’t think any other driver on the grid would be worse in that second Red Bull this year. It’s hard to watch. I hope for Red Bull’s sake, they’re willing to ditch him.
I agree they should ditch Perez. But your way of calculating is a bit unfair, given the car is the problem (as said by Max as well).
Max’s level keeps up his points tally because he is always close to podiums, but for a worse driver such as Perez this has become much harder. Perez ends up in the lower point regions much more, scoring only a handful of points, making the gap much bigger.
That said, Perez’s driving is very poor.
Yeah, I know what I was mathing out isn't a perfect representation, but it was moreso to suggest that if Checo were gathering even half as many points as Max, which should be entirely expected of any formula 1 caliber teammate, that Red Bull wouldn't have had an issue taking the constructor's championship this year.
That's such a tragic statistic. I understand having an off year but man, this is next level.
