However, no international rule change is currently planned. Former ice dancer Kaitlyn Weaver, a three-time world medallist and member of the International Skating Union's Ice Dance Technical Committee, said the issue had been discussed but not formally proposed.
"We have to treat this in a way where there's an education piece, there's an understanding, as opposed to putting it forward and then it getting shot down," Weaver said.
She added that the global political climate, including Donald Trump's re-election as U.S. president, has made progress more difficult.
"My concern really is, as the world is shifting into a more conservative – and it's not just happening in the States, it's happening around the world in certain places – my number one priority is safety of the athletes," she said.

It's not like these athletes are dating or married. I assume most pairs are simply teammates. So I don't get why it should be one man, one woman. And even if they are a couple, same-sex or otherwise, who cares? I mean, I know who cares. But fuck 'em, is what I say. Sorry for being crude.

This is ice dancing where generally there are no jumps (unless something has changed since I last watched the Olympics and became a temporary expert.) That's why it really doesn't matter as much...

That's why it really doesn't matter as much about the gender pairing. There are lifts but it's a different vibe than figure skating/ice skating pairs.

I think that in a sport where flexibility and agility seem to be the most important drivers, then—theoretically—a two-women dance team could have an edge over teams that have one or two men.

My mind also went here immediately. Then I wondered if having two women could be an advantage of its own since ice skating is rather artistic and the beauty/grace/elegance of the performance is a major part of the sport (and judging presumably).

It’s interesting and I actually think tradeoffs of team composition might exist for all the combinations, so it could become a point of strategy maybe.
