I haven't read them all but this one had a new perspective for me.

One thing to keep in mind about this drop of papers is that they were not created by OpenAI with the main goal of making progress in mathematical research, or even primarily for PR (there were some PR posts, but e.g. the final announcement was comparatively restrained). The main reason these papers exist is that OpenAI used unsolved math problems to evaluate their internal models for the purpose of improving their capabilities. They had to use hard open problems because these are the only ones still posing a challenge to frontier AI models. I believe that, from OpenAI’s point of view, the papers are essentially a byproduct of their internal development.Thus the company could just have remained silent, or picked a few flashy results for another blog post. I think it is to their credit that instead they reached out to the math community for guidance on how to proceed, leading to the formation of the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence. They followed some of the advice by this group, such as a timely release and (partial) Lean certificates, but not all of it, and in particular announced that they will continue to use open math problems for model development. In my view, the most pressing need of the math community right now is to have a central platform to discuss the results, start digesting the (by multiple accounts from colleagues, terribly written) papers, and report any mathematical mistakes or missing attribution. An OpenAI-controlled GitHub repository, with issues and pull requests disabled, cannot serve this purpose, and the ball is in OpenAI’s court to move the papers to a neutral repository and to back such a community effort with the promised funding for workshops and special programs.
I had not considered how these math problems are natural benchmarks for evaluating model capabilities. They are unsolved, yet verifiable, and also "cheap" to attempt since you don't have to set up physical environments, run clinical trials, etc.

irlappa LinkI have not evolved to cooking yet, but the costco chili is finally back in the prepared section and I love it. Plenty of meat, and some beans (kidney & pinto) for fiber. I wish they carried it year-round but I know it’s less popular in peak summer.
I also have gotten into their “cashew clusters” which are essentially sugared cubes of nuts and they’re perfect for throwing on top of the plain greek yogurt for an easy snack. Much easier than drizzling sweetener in the yogurt and it adds texture. 😋

But I went back to the (heartwarming) music video she did with mac miller for The Way and actually she looks similarly thin there as in your 2024 image, but she had way more healthy color back then. Not sure if I’m being deceived by lighting or if her nutrition (and health otherwise) has majorly declined. In my head I remember her as in this music video and I haven’t been keeping up I guess. Anyhoo, this was my excuse to rewatch the music video. Hope she gets better and rest in peace Mac Miller

Discontinuation symptoms can occur with any SSRI, but the frequency and severity of symptoms appear to vary according to the drug’s elimination half-life [2,15]. Randomized trials indicate that the likelihood of discontinuation symptoms is as follows [4,8,11,16-22]:
●Least risk of symptoms – Fluoxetine
●Intermediate risk – Citalopram, escitalopram, and sertraline
●Greatest risk – Paroxetine
A study of clinician initiated reports of adverse effects found that discontinuation symptoms occurred 10 times more often with paroxetine than sertraline, and 100 times more often with paroxetine than fluoxetine [5].Fluoxetine is least likely to cause discontinuation symptoms due to its relatively long elimination half-life and is tapered over a one to two week period; a reasonable alternative is to abruptly stop the drug.
Although we usually taper and discontinue fluoxetine over one to two weeks, the elimination half-life of fluoxetine (1 to 3 days) and its active metabolite norfluoxetine (4 to 16 days) are so long that some clinicians abruptly discontinue fluoxetine [1,14]. Evidence supporting abrupt discontinuation includes randomized trials that found discontinuation symptoms were comparable for fluoxetine and placebo when placebo was abruptly substituted for fluoxetine [16,17].

I saw a tweet speculating that it is very much for the Less rules & regulations reason. And that if you are an AI believer and think we’re scaling toward AGI, and you worry that regulations will potentially come down on building data centers (to slow that AI progress), then being able to build in space gives you more options to this pursuit.
Anyways I thought it was an interesting possibility however skeptical we might be of it.

Ice skating feels a lot more tractable for us to improve participation at least. And our medaling there this year will hopefully help

When I drive by bicyclists I usually will ride the left side of the lane. If it’s tight then maybe I’ll just go a tad over the line and let opposing traffic observe the situation and make room for us; I admit it’s a small pleasure when humans coordinate for each other.
I have wondered about how good tesla/waymo are about opting to break laws when it’s the human thing to do.

What about the defroster? that’s probably a button I would miss if I have to navigate at all; it’s one i have to press quickly on the go amidst worsening visibility usually, and if I have to stab at it on a touchscreen I might get irritated. I assume there’s physical control on the steering wheel for volume at least.
My friend has a tesla and I like that there’s karaoke mode for music. I am guilty of enjoying lyrics occasionally for my karaoke playlist in the apple music app (on my dash-mounted phone). Apple left the feature out of their CarPlay app for safety reasons presumably (and that’s reasonable enough). It’s the only thing I really miss from CarPlay and I don’t think I would need any other “features”— just music and maps. CarPlay and Android Auto have google maps and waze; iirc tesla doesn’t have those and that might be a dealbreaker for me.
As for the autopilot, what is its behavior in the left lane? Does it left lane lurk? I swear we have an issue in the greater seattle area with teslas sitting in the left lane.
I mostly agree now, nice hunting. And also I could not find a decent source alleging decompilation. Rather, I found lots of people saying “no bro it wasnt decompilation, the github says it was a clean room implementation!”.
To that, I’d say ofc it makes sense for the author to say that. To say otherwise or admit to decompiling would be opening oneself up to litigation (I assume?) from a very litigious company.
