What did you do this week (and weekend)?
As part of a weekly series, these topics are a place for users to casually discuss the things they did — or didn't do — during their week. Did you accomplish any goals? Suffer a failure? Do nothing at all? Tell us about it!
I had to say goodbye to my feathered friend on Halloween, so my family is dealing with that right now. And this week has been really hard for us all because Smookie had been with us for 22 years and it is the small things that is making it really difficult for my family.
I hear you, we had our 20 year old lovebird Squeak pass in January. It was rough to have our individual routines with her disrupted. Its wild how a creature so small could make such a big impact on your life. Smookie looks like they're happy on their favourite perch in that photo :) I hope you guys focus on the things you had that made you happy and that you get through the worst of it.
Thanks for the kind words. Even though Smookie was a small cockatiel, he had gave a lot of love, along with his big personality. And his love of anything with a crunch was funny. And he like to drop his seeds into the vent because of sound that it made and along with any papers on the floor around his cage. And he always gave his two cents whenever he could.
And the perch that he has in the picture, my younger sister put him there as a joke, and it is one of my favorite pictures of him. I have another picture of him when he had walked behind my neck to try to get into my hood.
Edit: @countchocula, sorry to hear about Squeak and their passing this year. Do you have a picture of your bird that you want to share?
Haha i love those funny little things like the dropping seeds into the vent. So much birdonality.
Squeak and Scruffy my current phone has very few images of her but she hated veggies, only ate millet and seeds. So we had to slap her with kale and lettuce to get her to angrily bite it and hopefully actually consume some of it.
Another birdonality that Smookie had was that he liked to chew on paper because of the noise that it would make. So we had to keep it out of reach when have some out and passing it around if it needed to be passed. So we had to be careful with him and paper.
Beautiful birds. Both of them look liked that are loved and happy.
Hahaha, that would be funny to witness.
Yeah some of those birdonality ticks is what we miss about our birds.
I had a green cheek die in a freak incident, I totally feel that. It disrupted a good chunk of our lives, because she was just such a big part of our lives for being small and mostly constrained to her cage (she played in/around it, and would come bite one of us if she fell off so we could put her back up).
Yeah it is really hard to describe an animal that is small like a bird can fill so much of your life. Especially when you had that animal for so many years.
What was your green cheek's name? If you don't mind me asking.
We called her Birbie and Monkey,
Starting a new job Monday. Pretty excited. I got the offer publicly just after my PhD defense in the form of a toast which overloaded my poor brain. Honestly, things are going pretty well for me right now and I dearly hope there ain't some other shoe dropping somewhere. I try not to give to much life to such thoughts since that can lead to unhappiness.
I started open ocean swimming. We had a series of 3 pretty serious great white shark attacks last summer so I've been a little apprehensive (one attack was a swimmer in the area I'm swimming from). But a good friend of mine has been an absolute cheerleader and gets out with me every morning at 7am to go. It's been incredible. The water clarity has been unreal this week so we've been able to see a huge diversity of sea life - nudibranch, rock fish, jelly fish, urchins, sea stars, etc - it's been unreal. We get out at sunrise and the town is just waking up and the early morning light it gorgeous.
I used to teach swimming and life guard so I'm not coming from zero, but it's still a big change. We started with a half mile and now I'm up to a mile within a week. It's been a great way to get a different perspective on a place I already love. Also the community of swimmers or just "dippers" who come out in the morning is lovely and inviting. Really excited for the new hobby!
