What did you do this week (and weekend)?
As part of a weekly series, these topics are a place for users to casually discuss the things they did — or didn't do — during their week. Did you accomplish any goals? Suffer a failure? Do nothing at all? Tell us about it!
Well, my 18-month-old son now calls for his "papa" all day and I think I must go to the doctor because my heart is melting.
Well if that just isn't capital news I don't know what is. Way to go, papa! Mine just hit 18. I get called, but just for money.
My guy is four and won't poop unless I'm hugging him while he pushes. Parenthood is a true blessing.
I just snorted tea all over my desk. Thank you for providing material for a future book.
Got a less than ideal performance rating at work (now two halfs in a row) so I think I'm technically on a PIP (performance improvement plan) but my manager seems determined to get me promoted in September, telling me that I'm already mostly operating at the next level, just need to improve my PR count metrics.
Feeling a bit down from that but besides that, I've been making progress on my plan to move out, will be signing a lease next week and moving out in a month! Super excited for that though not as excited about paying for everything haha.
So how does that work? If your manager gives you 'needs improvement' ratings yet you're up for a promotion, is it a way to keep a good worker while not having to give them the raise that comes with a good review?
could be that they’re giving the poor scoring to show they’re significantly stronger in part of their job that has them as a prime candidate for the other role, while the other part is holding them and, possibly, the team back.
Yep pretty much! Looking at my performance review this year was a bit funny because in the 5 areas we're basically graded on, I exceeded in 2, met 2, and then didn't meet one. And unfortunately, that one area that I didn't meet expectations on is enough to label me as "Met Most Expectations".
nice work! good boss to spot that and get you in the right direction, too.
Yeah I'm endlessly grateful for having a supportive manager and team, makes all the difference in the world.
I think it's because I just barely missed the "Meets All Expectations" bar and was therefore labeled as "Meets Most Expectations". Since I've already been showing an improvement in that key area I've been lacking, my manager mentioned that he can make a strong case for promotion. I'm already exceeding expectations in most other aspects of the job. Unfortunately for me, this one area I'm lacking in is pretty heavily weighed so it's holding me back.
Good for you, then. I hope that you get it (that is, if you want it!)
Thanks!
Hung out with a 12 month old with an ear infection. The whole family had the flu and when they slept, I watched Severance.
What an incredible show!
I pushed myself too hard working late to deliver some software while trying to be present for my four year old who was out of school this week. The work was delayed multiple times, but the delays were for his reasons that the planning just didn't catch. It felt like a big achievement, but was greatly undermined by news that my boss is stepping down. He was a game changer for our organization and validated a lot of my personal approach to software. So I'm pretty bummed and mostly hoping the company (a startup) is still healthy.
I took my guy skiing for the first time yesterday and he loved it. And took him climbing without an autobelay for the first time and he loved that too.
And I finally got a certificate of occupancy (8 months behind schedule) for a new home.
Big, rollercoaster of a week, and I didn't even think about it until this thread asked me to.
Travelled to Marrakesh for business and managed to squeeze a whole afternoon and evening of "doing a tourist thing", in a good company. Relaxed in a nice garden (riad), let some snakes hang from me, haggled at a souk ferociously, seen some completely illegally looking skins of animals, had a dinner at a rooftop restaurant during sunset and much more.
