In the state forest near me, there's the remnants of an old town that's been long abandoned (if I had to guess, great depression era or earlier) that goes for miles. A bunch of old cellar holes, sunken roads (now forest roads) lined with stone walls, pails and other old debris in the woods, the works.
The first time I popped out on the trail and saw it, the light was just right, shining golden on the fields and it felt a bit like walking through a dream.
Not a secret I suppose, but I like it a lot nonetheless

There is a similar Italian "restaurant" in my old area. It has been there for years (still is AFAIK) and yet there are rarely more than 2 cars parked out front even during peak time. We went in to have lunch once and got the weirdest looks from all the people that "worked" there as well as the group of elderly patrons huddled together in one of the booths at the back. The food was amazing though. ;)
And one of the Pho restaurants in the same area is also clearly a secret gambling establishment. Their "menu" is all tiny pictures numbered with weird codes (not just #1, 2, 3, etc) and the "order" form is a sheet with a ton of various boxes and written entry spots. There are about 30 TVs on the walls all around the place always tuned to various live sports events around the world. And if you go in more than once a day you will see the same patrons in the same booths/seats just drinking pot after pot of tea, having clearly been there all day. Once again, the food is friggin' fantastic though.
Apparently in my town if you went to the KFC or the Sonic and said the right thing in the drive thru they would sell you some meth. I never confirmed it but both got shut down so who knows.

A. Never did any public business or even appeared open
B. On their door it said something about only doing business by appointment... Shady.
C. Everything about the outside of the building would suggest they were open to the public.
One day everything was gone. They had cleaned out the place and repainted the building. No one else ever took it over. It was all very weird and no one local seemed to know what they were or did.
I hope it's ok to comment on something this old. Also, my contribution is a little more lighthearted. In my hometown, there was a man that we all called Plastic Man. He was a 60+ year old who was...

In my hometown, there was a man that we all called Plastic Man. He was a 60+ year old who was obsessed with his appearance: suntanning at the local beaches all day and working out for hours at the local gyms in the evening so his slightly crepe-y skin took on a deep brown, but somehow unnaturally shiny hue over his muscles. Plastic Man had straight, jet black hair that was always stiff, no matter what movements he made. He was pretty quiet; a generally pleasant guy, but he was also very gently adamant that he was much much younger than his actual age- often insisting he was in his forties.
But sometimes, if you happened to be walking down the street behind Plastic Man when it rained, you could see tendrils of black water making their way from his hair down his neck. The town secret, you see, was this: Plastic Man colored his hair with mascara. Once a week, he would go to the local drug store and buy two tubes of Blackest Black, always finding a reason to mumble something to the cashier about "buying for my daughter" before rushing out.
I don't know why it was even worth a conversation, let alone becoming town gossip. But boy did we all talk about it. Poor Plastic Man.

We want to facilitate quality discussion here no matter where it takes place, even on old submissions. That's the whole reason for the 'Activity - All Time' sort, so that people can feel comfortable going exploring through old submissions and making comments in them when they have something interesting to say. New comments trigger submissions to rise to the top of the 'Activity - All Time' sort so even more people can then see it and make a comment of their own as well. This is similar to the forum "bump" mechanic of old.
p.s. Someone in your town should inform Plastic Man that hair dye technology has come a long way in the last few years. :P
Great! Thanks! By the way, I first became aware of Plastic Man in the late 90s and I left that town in the early '10s. I think he was just too vain to buy hair dye and somehow he thought mascara...

My mom says he's still alive; hopefully he's discovered online shopping now.
Thanks for working hard to make this site feel so friendly and inclusive. It shows. :-)
I wonder if he worries Amazon will judge him for buying hair dye so still goes with mascara? :P And thanks, it's been a lot of work and we're all operating on very little sleep but it's been...

There's a guy in my town that everybody pretty much knows, he's a local 'celebrity' if you even want to call him that. On Fridays and weekends, he stands in front of the local movie theater and plays the flute with his case open in front of him to collect money, riding on his old beat up motorcycle once he leaves. The weird thing about this is: he is not homeless, he is supposedly quite affluent, and he also supposedly has a very attractive girlfriend.

Wow, where is this?

Rumor was that the local classic car lot trafficked more in cocaine than cars. Explains how they could stay in business with no local customers.
