I haven't checked-in in any of these threads for a bit to obfuscate my travel dates, but I've been settled in for a length of time now. My new home until I decide to find a job somewhere else is Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan.
I never got to deploy out here while I wore the uniform.

Since the beginning of October I have: left my job in Kuwait; visited family in the NE US; visited my long-distance partner and friends in Asheville, NC; spent some time at Fort Bliss, TX; went back to Kuwait, got stuck in Germany for a lot of hours on the way; spent some time at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan waiting for MILAIR; arrived at Kandahar Airfield. Not a long list, but I've been very busy this almost two-months.

Here are some pics from I think August til recently. Should be captioned for your contextual pleasure, hopefully in order.

More specifically on-topic, now that I'm all settled in my new room with the new job, I plan on getting back to the gym this week. I've been lax for far too long, and all the muscle I worked hard to get years ago is basically all gone. Current/Former deployers know that there's not a whole lot to do out here but work and work out. I'm not coming back to the US until I look like an underwear model again, dammit.

Other than that, I'll be tackling my creative writing project as part of Timasomo. I'm quite behind where I expected to be at this point, but I'm hopeful I'll be able to have my first draft by the end of 2019. We will see. If not, well, I'll just keep chugging away at it.

        Computer stuff, in essence.

When I wore the uniform, I was a 1N4X1. You can find the official job description online, but by nature of the job it doesn't say all that much and nether can I. Since I got out, my only viable career opportunities are jobs along the same lines. The only other jobs on my resume are standard, pre-enlistment things like retail work. So, at this point in my life I'm doing government contact work. In the past several years after taking off the ABU's I've worked all over this field doing a number of very different things. It's a very strange place to find myself in, to be honest. This isn't what I wanted to be when I grew up, and it's not what I want to spend my life doing. I just kind of, fell into it.

I'm really quite a hippie in my heart, and working for the US Government is this weird paradoxical thing to contend with. A few contacts ago I had a job in DC wearing a suit. Fucking bonkers, I tell you.

I've decided to stick with this line of work for the time being because my perception is that we're in for a rough time economically, in an unstable political climate. This job allows me to build a savings, and help support friends back home. While I'm here I'm going to try and get a degree, and segue myself into the Cybersecuity field. That ought to expand my portfolio of options in the near-term.

I think, when I grow up™, I want to be a Mycologist. A research scientist, for certain. The trick is finding out how to get there while staying financially stable along the way.

Fucking hell. You were in some sensitive shit as a fusion analyst, weren't you? It requires being eligible for Top Secret clearance, which, if memory serves, is above what special forces require of their field personnel.

It seems very impertinent to be as crude as I wish here, but – you were essentially a hacker, were you not?

You've carved quite a path for yourself, even outside of your military occupation. Goddamn this is fascinating. Now I want a book where you purposefully misname all of your surrounding personnel and operational details to tell the rough story of what happened.

Surely your previous experience in the military paints you in good light for a freelance gig or a dozen. You probably have some form of uncommon expertise in your field that others might find very useful in the business area.

Doing freelance work while studying in a separate field is quite an ask, but it seems to me there are options.

I was, and still am. It certainly gives a unique perspective on certain goings on in the world. What exactly I do, well, that's where I get to have a little fun and get to honestly say I can neither confirm nor deny.1

The thing with this careerfield is that if I ever want to publish a non-fictional work, I have to get it vetted to ensure it contains no privileged information. Otherwise I risk my clearance on one side of the spectrum, to my loss of freedom on the other. These NDA's don't expire.
Fiction is generally alright with minimal restrictions. If I wanted to write Tom Clancy-esque novels it'd probably be wise to get it vetted, but thankfully for the convenience I'm more inclined towards writing Fantasy/Science Fiction. If a work ever catches the interest of an agent, I'll for sure have to publish under a pen name. It would just be the smart thing to do.

And maybe. I'm sure the skills are applicable somewhere. Problem is that my resume is largely written in accomplishments and coded language, such that nobody outside of the field would understand the relevance or impact. It's already a pain trying to communicate my experience to people within the community during interviews. Very little is at an Unclass'd level.

I'm good at what I do, and quite a lot of tax dollars have gone into my training and keeping everything current. So I'm a bit hesitant to look at leaving the field at some point. It doesn't help that I live for the kind of news I currently can access. But, I have always wanted to work in the sciences. Time will tell if those cards are in my hands and fate agrees with my fascination with fungal organisms, or if this is just the thing I do with my life. Never a dull moment, for sure.

1It's kind of a cheeky thing to say, but it amuses me. A decade ago I didn't understand what exactly it meant, and thought it was a way to confirm something without confirming it. But really it means that one way or another, a more accurate answer would reveal too much information. You could be dead on, or way off mark. But my saying anything to imply anything just won't do. Thus, the canned Hollywood language.

I'm taking the next few weeks off of work for my mental health, so I'm really looking forward to just slowing down and relaxing for a minute. What in really looking forward to though is a cross country road trip I have with my siblings coming up; we're gonna start in the Midwest Sunday and make our way to the West Coast by Wednesday. It'll be a lot of driving but we're waking up early to hit a lot of national parks.

I'm preparing for my first lecture ever!

One of our universities have a math+programming competition for high schoolers, those who are good at it are freed from entry exams. The competition organizators also hold camp-like meeting twice a year, during which we meet, play games, go to nature, and listen to tons of lectures from professors and students from the university.

This year, they are low on organizators, and I mentioned that I'd love to have a lecture someday, that I like it and would like to get better at it. It turned out they thought it is a good idea as well, so suddenly I'll be having a short lecture this Saturday!

I'm really looking forward to this, and I'm quite a bit nervous as well. It'll be my first lecture of this type, and the longest thing I've ever presented, something around 60 minutes.

It'll be some basics about algorithms and such, so I fear that it'll be boring and complete waste of time for everyone in there. But I guess it's a good experience for me, and I'll be grateful that I did it.

I hope it will be at least a little bit interesting and I won't completely mess it up.

The computer i ordered is coming Wednesday, so ill be spending the day setting that up and downloading stuff that needs downloading. Nervous and excited. I've had my current computer for a nearly 9 years with only a graphics card and harddrive upgrade. It's been showing its age for awhile now but in the past few months its been struggling with the demands of Chrome. Not having to say a prayer whenever i switch my PC on is going to be a relief.

It's a customised prebuilt which i know is a bit sacrilegious to a lot of PC people but right price at the right time made me take the plunge. In the past when i have started looking at parts some other expense has always popped up or i've been told to wait a few months for X because they are going to go on sale etc.

I've never bought a prebuilt before so i think the only thing i have to do is add Windows which i'm still unsure of the best way to do it. Go for a clean install (key off ebay) or clone my current harddrive? Then i think its just a case of downloading all the programs i use on a regular basis and getting used to a new set up.

Usually, I'd say "working on Intergrid", 'cause that's what I've been doing for the last few weeks. But now, I feel like I'm starting to burn out on this task. I've been doing long coding sessions every day for as long as I've been doing this, and while it's exciting – both the process itself and seeing how a thing I work on takes shape and becomes alive – it's also taking a toll.

So... I dunno. What I know is: I want to be far away from anything web-related for some time.

Maybe I'll write something. I haven't written a story in a very long time. Something short and not tied into anything else, like I used to do back in 2012. I have a couple of things I put on the far end of the shelf that I'd like to explore.

Big work week for me - we have a huge demo coming up that I have to fly out to at the beginning of December, so it's closing stories and integrating things, and making sure we're in a good place for that.

I'm trying to finish up a few home projects, such as finishing up a few changes I've been working on for my 3d printer to make it a dual extrusion printer. I'd love to get that done and start printing out some things for people for Christmas, but more realistically my evenings will be filled with driving my children to the various activities that they do, and then falling asleep on the couch before going to bed with aching joints. The joys of being old! (I'm not even that old)

Last night I turned in the rough draft of my last paper for this semester. Thankfully, the final draft isn't due until the 27th, but between it and NaNoWriMo I'm definitely burnt out on writing and won't be working on my novel today.

I also don't have class today, which is nice. That means that Wednesday is the only day I have to go in before we get a week off for Thanksgiving.

To take advantage of the extra free time I have today, I'm going to be installing some new parts on my bike that I recently bought. I discovered that I don't particularly like drop bars. It could just be because the drop bars on my bike aren't padded much, but I went ahead and ordered a flat bar, brake levers, and brake cables to completely replace the drop bars.

After I get done with that and go for a nice bike ride, I'll spend this afternoon studying for a math test that I have to take Wednesday. I'm pretty nervous about it, but if I understand how my grade for the class is calculated and how our final exam affects our grade, then I only need to score something ridiculously low, like a twenty, to maintain a passing grade, so I don't think I'm in danger of failing the class. (Fingers crossed.)

Tuesday I will also be studying. After I take the math test on Wednesday and get home from class, I plan on "going hard" on finishing the rest of my homework for this semester, so that I can relax over Thanksgiving break. After break is over, I'll go back for one week of studying, then the week after that will be finals.

Finishing a song I started writing for my wife years ago so my best friend can slow dance with a gal he likes for the first time. My friend recently asked which songs of mine would make a good slow dance song, because he has a new love interest in a co-worker who said she's never slow danced before. The problem is, most of my recordings are lo-fi, rough sketches from an ongoing music journal I've kept for years. I decided to polish of a mellow one he can dance to with his friend.
