What did you do this weekend?
As part of a weekly series, these topics are a place for users to casually discuss the things they did — or didn't do — during their weekend. Did you make any plans? Take a trip? Do nothing at all? Tell us about it!
I spent a lot of time with my kids.
My son and I went out disc golfing three times. Disc golf is a great activity to get outside and be mildly active, with almost zero cost, and no social interaction. I packed my begs with wipes and I wipe down the cages before and after shooting, and the discs before each hole. The equipment I touch is all my own equipment, and we're never closer than about 10m to any other people. One of the outings was just me and my son throwing discs up and down a soccer field. He managed a 23m throw, which is pretty good; I'm topping out at about 105m which could be better. I'd like to get to 130m or so.
My middle daughter is really into lego and introductory programming, so I spent a bit of time with her doing each of these. She finished her Hogwards build, and then built the whole Harry Potter school bus on her own. She's also deeply into Harry Potter, so we played with Harry Potter mini bobblehead things that she got at Christmas.
My oldest daughter loves board games, so we played many after the other kids had gone to bed. She is a devious and tricksy little imp and managed to absolutely stomp me 1v1 at Splendour several times. She also took a couple wins in the games that also included my wife, though my wife also won a couple. I remained my 0% win over the weekend at board games. She also loves music, so we played a few songs together; currently we have been singing "Shallow" together, which is good for both of our vocal ranges.
My wife and I did a lot of chores, so we were often just ships passing in the night through the weekend, though we managed to spend some time watching Brooklyn 9 9, which is the show we're currently binge watching.
For personal time, I did a bit of yard work, cleaned up the vehicles a bit, started prepping towards working from home, and played a bit of "The Long Dark" which I've written about a couple of times. It's quiet and generally fairly relaxing, though... I think my character is going to die in my survival mode. I made a bad decision to explore without properly thinking through the rations I was bringing with, and now I'm stuck far from home without food.
<eye twitch> Yep, you're definitely a verified Dad. But haven't you read the Dad rulebook yet? It only counts towards your Dad high score if you mispronounce pop culture terms in front of your kid/s with at least one of their friends also present. And while Harry Potter is still highly valued right now, the maximum possible cringe points still comes from the classics of calling all video game consoles "the Nintendo", and all web sites/browser "the Google". ;)
Ah ha ha, that's just a typo (which I'll leave for posterity); I'm well versed, generally, in the things they are interested in, especially when they coincide with things I enjoy, like the Potterverse.
But sometimes I do the dad thing and say ridiculous things as well, as is my wont.
My life is rather minimal these days. I've been mostly working on the Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead mods:
Finalizing Private Defense, getting plastic firearms and their 3D-printing proof-of-concept ready for stable release.
Adding a proof-of-concept advanced modular gun system to Project APEX. Part of the experiment is adding trinkets and stickers to attach to your gun. They only work in APEX, and their purpose is decorational, but I still wanted to explore the idea of splinters of beauty in a world shaken by a disaster of enormous proportions: that there can be hope in a place this dire.
Minor additions to Homestead, which powers the above two mods: high-quality "polymer" material (for APEX' future mid-range gun scope with adjustable focal distance), GCODE files (for future CNC projects)...
Also, after several tense and abrasive conversations with multiple developers of Cataclysm, I've created two repos to track the departments in which the game is lacking: documentation and missing features. I got frustrated over the devs' awful handling of basic aspects of Cataclysm's development over time, and this was the fat last straw. As a modder working on a game I enjoy this much, it ground my gear too much to see some of the coolest features of the engine missing from the docs – or at all.
I redid my website. I'm now using a modified version of UNK to build my site. I have some more things I want to do architecture-wise, but it's about where I want it.
We also had a meet and greet with our foster (dog) -- she's most likely getting adopted today!
Otherwise, I stressed a bit about COVID. But now I'm at work where we're just carrying on, I guess. I'm waiting for the word to come down that we're closing / considering calling out for the time being.
I went to go visit my family for my brother’s birthday. This turned out to be a riskier play than I expected, because even though there are no coronavirus cases in the counties my family lives in, my brother decided to celebrate his birthday by going to Philly for St Patrick’s Day celebrations the day before we got there, and it turns out the rest of my family hadn’t really grokked social distancing either.
The actual weekend was good - it was nice to see my brother - but now my partner and I are self-isolating in our house for a week or so just to be safe. It’s a good thing we went grocery shopping right before we left!
