It blows my mind that this kind of policy by Google and Apple don't spark more general outrage. You can't even mention the fact that you accept donations on your website because Google feels somehow entitled to a cut? Why stop there? You linked to your website, violating our policy of no links to external websites hosted on non-Google service providers, cuz we want that juicy hosting money. Rejected. You provided a non-Gmail contact address, meaning some email provider other than Google is profiting off that. Rejected. Our streetview car happened to spot an Ecobee in the house where you coded the app, instead of a Nest. Rejected.

These Orwellian walled gardens and the eagerness with which the average consumer accept and immerse themselves in them is so frustrating.

Apple in particular has ratcheted up their greed in the last year or two.

That's why everything is turning to shit. Quality has to go down, or alternative revenue streams need created.

Even the tech monolith will eventually run out of value-add services they can sell to the consumer, so they'll just start selling the consumer to others and squeeze more money out of those trying to work on their platforms.

This makes me more angry than it should; probably because I actually use StreetComplete and like it quite a lot (it even has a place in my main screen!). It scratches the same itch as Pokemon Go...

This makes me more angry than it should; probably because I actually use StreetComplete and like it quite a lot (it even has a place in my main screen!). It scratches the same itch as Pokemon Go once scratched, except that with this app you actually do something useful - contribute to the OpenStreetMap project. And far for being an isolating experience, it actually makes you look at your surroundings.

Unfortunately, that's still quite the barrier to entry and eliminates quite a few would-be contributors who might not even learn that it exists now.
