This strikes me as a bid to show "growth" to investors - forcing people to create accounts to upload will inflate new user counts.

I keep seeing this term thrown around a lot lately. Is it new?

Somewhat, yeah. There was an article recently talking about how social media (and in my opinion tech startups as a whole) goes through stages, where it first provides a valuable service to users to gain marketshare, then ''enshittifies" that service so it can bring more value to advertisers, then enshittifies THEM so that they can bring all the profit back to the company itself. The article is really good and perfectly encapsulates my issues with the profit motive that seems to be driving all good things off a cliff lately:

This isn't very clear. Will there be content not tied to a user account that won't be removed? I've never uploaded anything using an account.

We will be focused on removing old, unused, and inactive content that is not tied to a user account from our platform

I searched the new TOS and the community rules and couldn't find anything clarifying. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

And here's a link to the new TOS.

We recently announced some changes to our Terms of Service that will be effective May 15, 2023.

We will be focused on removing old, unused, and inactive content that is not tied to a user account from our platform as well as nudity, pornography, & sexually explicit content. You will need to download/save any images that you wish to save if they no longer adhere to these Terms.

And here's a link to the new TOS.

Imgur has changed so much since its inception. Is this related to Reddit's API change announcement, or just coincidence in terms of timing?

I doubt it's coincidence. Reddit announces they're restricting access to NSFW content to their app only (and soon to hide it behind paywall if not outright banning it) and Imgur simultaneously announces there barring all NSFW content, which is primarily just linked to reddit anyway. So this moves puts all the NSFW moderating in reddit's hands or on other image hosts, frees up imgur resources, reduces risk.

Imgur was born from reddit and for awhile (maybe still?) you could browse reddit via imgur by just seeing all the images posted to a sub. They are highly integrated, but imgur started making itself a "community" and reddit added their own image hosting, so the separation began some time back.

Those days are over because no one posts imgur links to reddit anymore. Imgur is just its own mini social media platform now. Presumably the enormous legacy of anonymous images which can’t be shown on the public feeds is costing a huge amount while generating no income.

Imgur actually tried to become a paid platform like flicker but they dropped the paid option, presumably not enough people paid for it.
