Any Tasker users around?
I just recently joined Tildes (absolutely loving it so far, by the way) and also recently left Reddit.
r/Tasker will probably be the hardest for me to let go of since I'm an avid Tasker fan/user, so I'm just trying to gauge the audience for that type of discussion and topics here on Tildes.
I'm not as big of a power user in phone automation as I would like to become but I'm fairly savvy and am learning more all the time.
I am, but my use of Tasker has waned significantly since it's early days. Mostly because my interest in automating my phone and tinkering with it non-stop has waned. I do still use it for a few mundane tasks such as automating daily texts to my credit union and credit card companies to get balances and automating silent modes in various contexts.
I'm with you there. I used to do a bunch of stuff with custom roms, tasker, locale and such, but then I had kids... Lol.
I wouldn't mind looking through others' automations.
In a similar vein I've switched to MacroDroid because for what little automation I desire nowadays (like switching vibrate on and sound off when I ain't at home) it's much easier and smoother to configure and use.
I've always wanted to get into Tasker too but it only came around as my interest in tinkering with my phone was already waning too. My lack of interest in tinkering with my phone at the moment has me considering switching to iPhone and just accepting whatever Apple throws my way. I'm having fun with the Material You theming but even that only goes so far.
I still rely on a number of Tasker automations on my Pixel* (currently a 7 Pro), though I confess I haven't tweaked or built new ones in... years, probably.
The main profiles I'm currently using are:
Past profiles that I'm particularly proud of:
logcat
messages)Oh that's a great idea. I'm going to play around with sending a notification to my Coros watch. Thanks for the idea!
I've thought about doing something like that or setting up the Magisk ACC module but on my OP9 I haven't really had issues with charging or battery life so far. It does some pretty interesting charge controlling on its own with the 2 Li-ion cells it has.
Yep, I've been pretty happy with that - especially with the recent update which allows it to kick-in whenever the phone anticipates a long charging session even if you don't have a morning alarm set.
Is there anyway to override it and tell the phone to just fill 'er up though?
That would be my concern is needing to power charge on short notice and being stuck with a trickle charge because my phone doesn't understand that I need to leave in 20 minutes.
It seems really "smart" out of the box, to the point that I only need to worry about this if my schedule is totally upended and I need a quick charge at the time I'd normally be going to bed. But these phones also charge the first 50% very quickly so I don't even worry about a full charge most of the time.
I don't charge my phone overnight as the battery on my Pixel 6 goes 1.5 days easily, and I prefer to charge my phone when sitting at my work desk. It charges within an hour and a half. But at the times when I do want to charge it overnight, it knows and will automatically slow it to time it with when my morning alarm is set.
I've never felt the need to adjust these settings, it just works out of the box.
That's incredibly sophisticated sounding. It's amazing what they can do with technology now
Yep! You can turn it off if you'd like.
Eh, I solved this on the other end. It takes so many cycles for the battery to degrade to a significant degree, I got a Fairphone 4. I can just swap it out for a new one. In like 10 seconds.
I'm jealous of you. I would enjoy a Fairphone but I live in the USA.
I used it in the past. Slowly but surely Android updates took over most of its uses for me, though.
Boy is that the truth. That's part of why I run a rooted custom ROM on mine because everytime they release a new android another power user feature gets restricted further.
I have a tablet for recipes etc. in the kitchen which uses Tasker and a camera motion detector to turn on (and keep on) the screen while someone is in the kitchen. Works really well, especially since you sometimes have dirty hands when working in the kitchen and you can't really touch the tablet to look at the recipe.
I used to use it for a lot more, but recently my main use case has been to forward push notifications from an old phone with microG to a new phone that isn't connected to Google through Gotify.
Gadgetbridge supports using Tasker to interact with the outside world through the Fossil Hybrid HR, and I've been meaning to give that a try (https://codeberg.org/Freeyourgadget/Gadgetbridge/wiki/Fossil-Hybrid-HR#user-content-using-tasker-easer-or-another-automation-app).
r/tasker is definitely going to be one of the hardest to leave for me, especially since I think it's the only (maybe aside from the mailing list, if it didn't die) official forum for it now.
Right now, the only task I have set up is a silly one that will automatically hide the mobile data indicator from my status bar if I'm on wifi (by modifying settings exposed by CrDroid). I don't really have a need for the extra space, but it's nice when half the space is taken by a notch (still running a POCO F1 with a crack right where the battery indicator is)
Before though, I did use it for a few more things, the obligatory "fullbright on YouTube/gallery/camera" task, AutoShare to yt-dlp stuff over to a server, TTS notifications, and of course home automation (by that I mean turning the singular smart light I could afford on/off, but cleverly), and some other miscellaneous stuff I needed back when I wasn't sitting on my ass home all day.
With reasonably reliable WhatsApp access through this mdtest thing now being a thing, I do have a couple more things I might want to do, but I haven't really bothered with it yet.
Project sharing wise there's taskernet but I find it clunky and only use it to download from a link I found (typically on Reddit).
I suppose time will tell and I'll make do if they persist on Reddit.
Never really used it but quite interested in the concept, especially on android. I mostly manage my usual tasks using the built-in calendar app, so never found the need for it.
For my IT project specific tasks, I prefer to manage them on my desktop (laptop) as I think mobile is an ill equipped tool for that kind of thing to start with.
For most other things like File Manager, FTP, Notepad, games, etc., there are effective apps available on the play store. Could you state how has Tasker been helpful to you?
Sure thing I'd be happy to elaborate.
I have a OnePlus 9 running LineageOS for context here.
That's most of what I have it doing but there are people who put my usage to shame. It's a really powerful and versatile app, but the learning curve can be quite steep.
I wrote a csv logger for my battery% and the epoc timestamp, so when I plug it in it writes those and "ON" then when unplugged it writes those and "OFF." I should really look at the data sometime. I think I've collected it for the entire life of my Pixel4a. I wrote it when I had a OnePlus 3 because my battery life was starting to be weird and I wanted to see it's ups and downs.
Other than that just something that android probably does now but I already have a tasker for it. During my work hours it puts phone on vibrate then returns to normal after.
I made a thing recently because I left reddit and to replace it I started playing farmrpg and in it you can play the stock market by buying and selling steak kabobs, whose price changes hourly. So during my waking hours I just have my phone play the ol casio beep at XX:01 so I can remember to check steak kabob prices lol.
yes yes! I have a galaxy fold 2 so I use it to automatically switch the keyboard when I unfold to a more ergonomic one. Got a few little ones too like when I disconnect from my car it will automatically mark it on the map. Love fiddling around with it
Tasker is one of the mandatory installs on a new phone. I automate the basics–wallpaper changes, wifi toggle, ringtone volume, etc. But now that I've done all of that, I mainly use it to automate maths. It would probably make more sense to use a computer programming language for that, but I don't know anything about coding, and I do know anything about Tasker.
My favorite thing I ever designed in it was a GPS for Subnautica. I can't even begin to understand the math that makes a trilateration algorithm work (I know it finds a point based on a single intersection of three different circles, but like, how?), but I do know how to implement that math into a computer to do it for me. Any time I feel impostor syndrome because I can't quite wrap my head around a Matt Parker video, I think about that, and suddenly I feel a little bit smarter.
