The "fall" was mainly poor management by one of the original creators as well as revelations that he had plagiarized some content and deliberately added some misinformation to "troll" people after...

He's out now, and the current owners hope to run Snopes better in the future.

I've never actually hit their paywall either, so I'm not sure what kind it is. But I do know they have one since I remember them mentioning they disabled it for Ukraine war related articles last...
